A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR CENTENARIAN LEWIS JACKSON BEAUBE OF GREENWOOD COUNTY AND TO EXPRESS DEEP APPRECIATION FOR HIS DEVOTED SERVICE TO HIS GOD AND TO HIS COUNTRY DURING ONE OF THIS NATION'S DARKEST HOURS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are sincerely grateful for the life and service of Lewis Jackson Beaube, one of the oldest living veterans of World War II in the Palmetto State; and

Whereas, born in Baskin, Louisiana, on May 4, 1916, near the end of the War to End All Wars, Lewis Beaube was destined to become part of the Greatest Generation; and

Whereas, the son of Sarah Mae and James Beaube, he completed his high school education in Baskin and pursued further education in night school after work at Greenwood Mills, eventually earning a degree in music from Lee College in Baytown, Texas; and

Whereas, in 1944, he volunteered for service in the United States Navy, and Seaman 1st Class Beaube served with distinction as a radio operator on the USS Thornton during World War II and was awarded the American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with one Service Star, and World War II Victory Medal; and

Whereas, in the spring of 1945, the USS Thorton, a Clemson-class destroyer, collided with two Naval oilers, all part of the Search and Reconnaissance Group of the Southern Attack Force patrolling the coast of Japan. Lewis Beaube fell off the side and was pulled under the surface. When he resurfaced at the bow of the ship, a man wearing a light-brown suit helped him up, but neither spoke to the other. The man walked away and vanished after saving Seaman Beaube, who is convinced God sent him a guardian angel; and

Whereas, the fleet to which the USS Thornton was assigned received commendations for successfully downing several Japanese kamikaze planes and sinking a number of suicide boats; and

Whereas, at an early age, Mr. Beaube learned to hunt and fish and was an avid reader. He read the Bible and studied it daily as well, and he was active in the ministry of visiting and inviting neighbors to church, helping those in need, and serving his community; and

Whereas, for more than seventy years, he has been a devoted member of Restoration Ministries Church of God in Greenwood, where he taught Sunday school for many years. He continues to teach a weekly Bible study at National Healthcare in Greenwood where he now resides; and

Whereas, Mr. Beaube married his beloved wife, the late Martha Fain Beaube, in Warrenville, and together they reared four fine children: the late Loretta B. Reed, the late Burgess Beaube, Philicia Beaube, and Pam B. Arrowood; and

Whereas, born in the early part of the twentieth century, Lewis Beaube has witnessed many remarkable social changes, technological advancements, and international developments that have spanned the globe for the past century; and

Whereas, in spite of that long passage of time and innumerable changes, he remains faithful to his God, hoping for that day when he can declare to his heavenly Father, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race; I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day"; and

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives profoundly values the service that Lewis Beaube has rendered to his community, to the Palmetto State, to this nation, and to his God, and the members cherish the strong legacy of faith and sacrifice he has built for those who know him. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor centenarian Lewis Jackson Beaube of Greenwood County and express deep appreciation for his devoted service to his God and to his country during one of this nation's darkest hours.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Lewis Jackson Beaube.
