A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR BETTYE DORN UPON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT AFTER FIFTY YEARS OF EXEMPLARY SERVICE AT SELF REGIONAL HEALTHCARE IN GREENWOOD AND TO WISH HER CONTINUED SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS IN ALL HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that Bettye Dorn has begun a well-deserved retirement after five decades of loyal service at Self Regional Healthcare. Her last day of employment was April 10, 2019; and

Whereas, the longest-tenured employee in the facility's history, she began her employment among its first black hires in 1969, just a few years after the hospital's acquisition of Brewer Hospital, which marked the end of segregated healthcare in the region; and

Whereas, when Ms. Dorn was reassigned from the pharmacy where she served as a pharmacy technician, she was assigned to the business office to assist with billing for Medicare, the newly launched national health insurance program. Her understanding of that complex system allowed the hospital to develop a billing system far more advanced than other rural hospitals had at the time; and

Whereas, she loved helping people, interacting with patients who were in a quagmire over handling their finances, and finding answers to their questions about insurance or governmental regulations that overwhelmed them; and

Whereas, a role model and a willing mentor to many of her colleagues, Ms. Dorn would never hesitate to share her knowledge with coworkers who valued her help; and

Whereas, over the years, she was the calm and caring voice at the end of a phone line in the business office, helping patients at the facility through the arduous process of filing insurance claims or assisting them with payment arrangements while never losing her temper or forgetting the humanity of her work; and

Whereas, Ms. Dorn plans to spend many industrious hours early in her retirement getting her house in order and cleaning it, especially her closets, and on other chores that she has not had time to do; and

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives deeply appreciates the half century of graceful and professional dedication that Bettye Dorn has devoted to Self Regional Healthcare, and the members wish her many years of enjoyment in her well-earned retirement. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Bettye Dorn upon the occasion of her retirement after fifty years of outstanding service at Self Regional Healthcare and wish her continued success and happiness in all her future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Bettye Dorn.
