A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE MRS. BERNICE JACKSON BROWN OF FAIRFIELD COUNTY ON THE OCCASION OF HER NINETIETH BIRTHDAY AND TO WISH HER MUCH HAPPINESS IN THE YEARS AHEAD.

Whereas, on Wednesday, December 18, 2019, Bernice Jackson Brown, awoke to a day of rejoicing, as family and friends gathered to celebrate her milestone ninetieth birthday; and

Whereas, Bernice was born on December 18, 1929, in Fairfield County. The daughter of Dave Jackson and Mariah Bagley Jackson, she spent much of her early life in Winnsboro; and

Whereas, Bernice received her early education from Fairfield County Training School, graduating in 1946. She went on to continue her education at Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina before transferring to Benedict College in Columbia. There, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in social studies. An enthusiastic learner, she continued on to receive further education at both Hampton University and the University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, Mrs. Brown began her teaching career in 1951 as a substitute teacher at the Fairfield County Training School. During the 1951-52 school year she went on to teach at the Bethlehem School in rural Fairfield County. Beginning in 1962, she secured a position as a social studies teacher at Fairfield High School. She remained in that position until 1970, after which she continued on to teach at Winnsboro High School until her retirement in 1984. In 1994, she took one last academic year to serve as an educator at the Fairfield Learning Center in their Adult Education program; and

Whereas, on December 21, 1955, Bernice married her late husband, John E. Brown. During the course of their marriage they were blessed with two beautiful daughters, Veronica Brown Graham and Sharon Brown Stackhouse. She's also now the proud grandmother to two grandchildren, Mariah and John Stackhouse; and

Whereas, Bernice continues to enjoy her life as a longtime member of various organizations and groups. Among those affiliations are Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, The National Council of Negro Women, Inc., Benedict College Alumni, and the Benedict College Half Century Club. Bernice has also been recognized for church, civic, and educational service in her community. She received awards in 1984 for dedicated service to Fairfield County Schools, in 1994 for her dedicated service to the Fairfield County Substance Abuse Commission from 1989-1991, in 2002 for her devotion and commitment to Saint Paul Baptist Church, and in 2009 for her work with the Kenneth Adamson Memorial Scholarship Fund; and

Whereas, Mrs. Brown's priorities of faith and family have served her well to create many joyful memories over the years. She remains a wonderful cook who enjoys preparing meals for her family and friends. She also continues to be a caring person to her community and has a steadfast and positive impact on the many lives around her; and

Whereas, it is a great pleasure to recognize this daughter of South Carolina at the celebration of her ninetieth birthday and to join with her family and friends in congratulating her on reaching this important life milestone. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Mrs. Bernice Jackson Brown of Fairfield County on the occasion of her ninetieth birthday and wish her much happiness in the years ahead.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mrs. Bernice Jackson Brown.
