VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE PASSING OF PENINNAH BOWEN LOWRY OF YORK COUNTY AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER LARGE AND LOVING FAMILY AND HER MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were saddened to learn of the death of Peninnah Bowen Lowry at the age of one hundred two on Thursday, February 20, 2020; and
Whereas, born in the Eastview community of York on March 19, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Ella Davidson Bowen and Clarence Bowen, Sr., and was reared with five brothers and five sisters; and
Whereas, educated in York County Schools, young Peninnah accepted Christ at an early age and joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church in McConnells; and
Whereas, together with her beloved husband of fifty-two years, the late Arthur Lowry, Sr., she reared three sons, Clarence Lowry, Arthur Lowry, Jr., and the late William O. Berry. She was blessed with the affection of eleven loving grandchildren, five of whom she also reared: Karen, Jerome, Darryl, Valerie, and Angela. She had the special joy of twenty-one great-grandchildren and fourteen great-great-grandchildren; and
Whereas, after Mr. and Mrs. Lowry were married, they became faithful members of Langrum Branch Baptist Church where she served the congregation in the usher ministry, deaconess ministry, Hymn Choir, and Burial Aide Society and as a Sunday school teacher, the vacation Bible school director, and president of the missionary ministry; and
Whereas, Mrs. Lowry served many years in the York School District as a cook at the former McCelvey Elementary School; and
Whereas, her membership in other organizations included Order of Eastern Star, White Hill # 350, Sandy River Baptist Association Upper Division, Women's Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina, and the Western York County Branch of the NAACP; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the life and legacy of Peninnah Lowry and for the example of service and kindness she set for all who knew her. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Peninnah Bowen Lowry of York County and extend their deepest sympathy to her large and loving family and her many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Peninnah Bowen Lowry.
