A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE PASSING OF MARJORIE ELIZABETH HIPP MILLS OF SALUDA COUNTY AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER LARGE AND LOVING FAMILY AND HER MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were saddened to learn of the death of Marjorie Elizabeth Hipp Mills at the age of ninety-one on Saturday, February 29, 2020; and

Whereas, born in Saluda County on June 23, 1928, she was the daughter of Wilbert Ariail Hipp and Willie Mae Fulmer Hipp and graduated from Hollywood High School in 1945; and

Whereas, Mrs. Mills earned a bachelor's degree in home economics from Lander College in 1949 where she served on the student council during her senior year; and

Whereas, shortly after her graduation, she married her beloved Fred T. Mills, who had grown up on an adjacent farm to her family's in the Hollywood community, and they were happily married for over seventy years. Together they reared three fine sons: Steve, Kirk, and Cliff. Her children blessed her with the affection of five grandchildren: Joshua Mills, Lori Mills, Leah Winn, Travis Mills, and Austin Mills. She was blessed to see the continuation of her loving legacy in five great-grandchildren: Hannah, Noah, Layla, Holson, and Wyatt; and

Whereas, in 1954, Mrs. Mills and her husband established Marfred Dairy Farm, beginning with only twelve Guernsey cows, and started producing Golden Guernsey milk for Edisto Farms Dairy; and

Whereas, very involved in the daily operations of the farm while rearing her three sons, she was instrumental in making Marfred Farm one of the best-known Guernsey herds in the nation: milking the cows, raising the calves, and managing the farm's finances; and

Whereas, when they expanded to over two hundred head of registered Guernsey cows, Mrs. Mills still found time to be involved in community and county organizations in Saluda, especially in the Hollywood Chapter of the Clemson Extension Home Demonstration Club; and

Whereas, in 1970, she was inducted into the South Carolina chapter of the Master Farm Homemakers Guild, serving as president of the prestigious organization in the 1980s and serving on the national board for several years; and

Whereas, for many years, the couple's summer vacations centered around attending annual conventions of the Master Homemakers Guild, driving by car to such far away destinations as Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, and New Mexico; and

Whereas, the Mills' family was named the South Carolina Guernsey Family of the Year in 1980 and received the South Carolina Master Dairy Farm Family Award in 1999, and Mrs. Mills was the South Carolina Guernsey Association Honoree in 1995; and

Whereas, Mrs. Mills cherished a lifelong and abiding faith and was deeply devoted to her church, Corinth Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school classes for many years and served as president of the Women's LCW on several occasions. Throughout her life, nothing was ever more important to her than her faith, her church, and her family; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the life and legacy of Marjorie Mills and for the example of sacrifice and dedication she set for all who knew her. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Marjorie Elizabeth Hipp Mills of Saluda County and extend their deepest sympathy to her large and loving family and her many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Marjorie Elizabeth Hipp Mills.
