A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO SALUTE THE CARDINAL NEWMAN MENS BASKETBALL TEAM ON NAILING THE SOUTH CAROLINA INDEPENDENT SCHOOL ASSOCIATION CLASS 3A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE AND TO HONOR THE TEAM'S SUPERB ATHLETES ON AN AMAZING 2020 SEASON.

Whereas, knowing they would be considered the team to beat, the Class 3A Cardinal Newman Cardinals prepared fully for the challenge of capturing their second straight South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA) state title. They achieved their goal, downing Trinity-Byrnes 52-49 in Sumter on Saturday, February 29, 2020; and

Whereas, with jubilant Cardinal fans cheering them on, the Cardinal Newman players found worthy opponents in the Trinity Byrnes Collegiate Titans but still owned the win by the final buzzer; and

Whereas, the Cardinals jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the first five minutes of the game. The Titans did not go easily, however. During the match, the lead changed hands several times, making for much nail-biting among fans on both sides. After a Cardinal timeout, Thomas Tyler, on the line with 24.7 seconds left, hit both free throws for a 51-46 lead. The Titans grabbed an offensive board as they desperately tried to stay in the game, but Payton Cooper came up with a huge block that L.J. White corralled. His free throw with five seconds remaining put the Cardinals up 52-46, so a Trinity-Byrnes 3-pointer at the buzzer was inconsequential; and

Whereas, as the Cardinals accepted their trophy, having avenged a loss to Trinity-Byrnes earlier in the year (their only loss to a SCISA team all season), supporters began making plans to watch their team make it a threepeat next year; and

Whereas, over a successful season, the Cardinal Newman team grew increasingly more aware of how to put their talents to use and how to forge winning strategies implemented with a marked determination. They put their agility, strength, and perseverance to the test in the title match, which netted them, along with a state crown, berths on the All-Tournament team for players Thomas Tyler and Josh Beadle; and

Whereas, such an impressive performance is not achieved by accident. Head Coach Philip Deter masterfully molded his team into a championship machine, enabling the Cards to hoist the title trophy once again; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives take great pleasure in recognizing the young athletes of the Cardinal Newman mens basketball team and anticipate with interest learning of their continued praiseworthy achievements. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, salute the Cardinal Newman mens basketball team on nailing the South Carolina Independent School Association Class 3A State Championship title and honor the team's superb athletes on an amazing 2020 season.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Robert Loia and Head Coach Philip Deter of Cardinal Newman.
