A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE PASSING OF ERNEST J. NAUFUL, JR., OF RICHLAND COUNTY AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS LARGE AND LOVING FAMILY AND HIS MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were saddened to learn of the death of Ernest J. Nauful, Jr., at the age of seventy-eight on Tuesday, April 28, 2020; and

Whereas, born in Columbia on September 28, 1941, he was the son of the late Ernest J. Nauful, Sr., and Elizabeth Gloria Joseph, and he earned a bachelor's degree in business management from the University of South Carolina in 1965, where he served as charter president of the Carolina Chapter of the American Management Association, and a juris doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1968; and

Whereas, in the proud tradition of the sons of South Carolina, Mr. Nauful served with distinction in the United States Air Force Reserves; and

Whereas, a preeminent attorney known statewide for his trial skills and expertise in healthcare law, medical malpractice, and occupational diseases, he practiced law in the State for forty-two years during which he was admitted to the South Carolina Supreme Court, the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, the United States Tax Court, the United States Court of Claims, and the United States Supreme Court; and

Whereas, Mr. Nauful co-authored "Hospital Consent Manual and Legal Reference Guide," South Carolina Bar's Jurisprudence "Hospital Law," and a national publication in the Journal of the Federation of Insurance Counsel on "Peer Review," and he was instrumental in drafting the laws in South Carolina related to emergency medical services and served on the State Emergency Medical Services Advisory Council, including a term as chairman, for eighteen years; and

Whereas, a charter member of the South Carolina Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates, he served his profession as a member of the Richland County Bar Association; South Carolina Bar, where he served as a member of the House of Delegates; Federation of Defense Counsel; American Society of Law and Medicine; South Carolina Society of Hospital Attorneys; and South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys Association, where he served as a member of the board, secretary/treasurer, and president; and

Whereas, Mr. Nauful's outstanding career was recognized with an honorary life membership in the Lexington Medical Association. He was a recipient of the Pinnacle Award from The Palmetto Hospital Trust; PHT Services, LTD; and Palmetto Health Liability Program for his contributions to the three organizations; and

Whereas, an active and faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, he served in many capacities and chaired or co-chaired three capital campaigns for the church and school and was honored to serve as a Lector and was also an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist; and

Whereas, an avid Gamecock fan, Mr. Nauful was a member of the Gamecock Club for over fifty years and particularly enjoyed Carolina football and baseball. He had superb culinary skills and was a skilled handyman, and he enjoyed gardening, fishing, and hunting; and

Whereas, his beloved wife and best friend of more than fifty years, Brenda Bradley Nauful, is left to cherish his loving memory, along with two brothers, four sisters, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the life and legacy of Ernest Nauful and for the example of service and generosity he set for all who knew him. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Ernest J. Nauful, Jr., of Richland County and extend their deepest sympathy to his large and loving family and his many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to his wife Brenda Bradley Nauful.
