A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE PASSING OF SHAWN LECLAIR REEVES OF RICHLAND COUNTY, ASSISTANT GENERAL COUNSEL FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES, AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST CONDOLENCES TO HIS LOVING FAMILY AND HIS MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were saddened to learn of the death of Shawn Leclair Reeves at the age of forty-two on July 5, 2020; and

Whereas, born on May 9, 1978, he was the son of the late Johnnie Leclair Reeves and LaDonne Shuler. With his mother and stepfather, Glenn Shuler, he enjoyed a large and loving family with his five siblings: Stacey Owens, Matthew Shuler, Paul Shuler, Hannah Fakoornejad, and Samuel Shuler; and

Whereas, Shawn Reeves earned a bachelor's degree in biology from the College of Charleston in 2001 and a juris doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 2004; and

Whereas, early in his legal career, he developed a passion for family and child welfare law, and most recently he was employed as assistant general counsel for the Department of Social Services. Mr. Reeves borrowed a quotation engraved above the Old Bailey in London to describe the heart of his vocation: "Defend the children of the poor and punish the wrongdoer"; and

Whereas, he passionately sought justice and security for the most vulnerable in South Carolina and contributed his legal and mediation skills to the community, using his skill to help families; and

Whereas, Mr. Reeves served his profession on the board of the Midlands Mediation Center and as a member of the South Carolina Bar Children's Law Committee; and

Whereas, together with his beloved wife, Amy Carol Reeves, he loved finding new recipes and cooking with her. They were blessed with three fine children: Atticus Leclair, Amelia Caroline, and Tennyson Way; and

Whereas, his joy in the splendor of life included a deep appreciation for art, literature, and travel, all of which he imparted to his children, fostering intellectual curiosity in them as the family traveled extensively, visiting art museums around the world, enjoying long hikes in the Upstate, and kayaking through the Lowcountry marshes; and

Whereas, a devout Episcopalian and a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Mr. Reeves journaled and meditated on passages from the Book of Common Prayer daily. Not only creative and deeply spiritual, he was disciplined in physical health and completed the rigorous Murph workout every Tuesday morning at 4:30; and

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is grateful for the life and legacy of Shawn Reeves, for his splendid joie de vivre, and for the example of service he set for all who knew him. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sympathy upon the passing of Shawn Leclair Reeves of Richland County, assistant general counsel for the Department of Social Services, and extend their deepest condolences to his loving family and his many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Shawn Leclair Reeves.
