A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR DR. HENRY JAMES MARION, UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT AFTER THIRTY-SEVEN YEARS OF EXEMPLARY SERVICE, AND TO WISH HIM CONTINUED SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS IN HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate have learned that Dr. Henry James Marion began a well-deserved retirement on December 31, 2019, and will be honored for his significant contributions to the medical community at a reception to be held at Lexington Medical Center on Thursday, January 16, 2020; and

Whereas, born in Moncks Corner in 1953, he received primary and secondary education in Berkeley County schools, graduating from Berkeley High School in 1971. Dr. Marion earned a bachelor's degree in biology summa cum laude from Claflin College in Orangeburg in 1975, where he was a Dean's List scholar throughout; and

Whereas, during his collegiate years, he was a member of the Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society, multiple science organizations, and Phi Beta Sigma fraternity, highlighted by extensive work in a regional water research program; and

Whereas, after graduation, Dr. Marion continued research work at Westvaco Corporation in North Charleston until 1979, at which time he entered the Medical University of South Carolina. He earned a medical degree in 1983 and completed a three-year residency in family medicine at Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia; and

Whereas, upon completing his residency, Dr. Marion served two years with the National Health Service Corps in Winnsboro and continued his community service with the Family Health Centers of Orangeburg, serving briefly as the medical director and helping to establish the facility's maternity services; and

Whereas, in affiliation with the Regional Medical Center of Orangeburg, Dr. Marion served as chairperson to establish the first local hospice program; and

Whereas, a board-certified physician, he has been in family practice for thirty years, twenty-two of those years with Lexington Medical's Family Practice on Polo Road. He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Board of Family Medicine, the American Medical Association, and the South Carolina Family Practice Association; and

Whereas, Dr. Marion has served as a consultant, as a member of the speakers' bureau for several pharmaceutical corporations, and as medical director for the Lexington Chapter of the Medical Group Managers Association; and

Whereas, throughout his medical career, he has been deeply involved in community services and an advocate for preventive health management. He remains an active participant in forums and health fairs; lectures on topics related to healthcare maintenance, disease prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment; and continues his work with a local hospice program; and

Whereas, for his outstanding contributions to the healthcare community, Dr. Marion has been honored with numerous awards, including the Physician of the Year Award; the 2018 Lexy Award, the Lexington Medical Center Physician Service Award; and the 2011 Annual Patient's Choice Award for Exemplary Patient Care and Community Service; and

Whereas, together with his beloved wife, Deborah, he has reared two fine children, Brandon and Courtney, who have blessed their parents with two adoring grandchildren, Willow and London; and

Whereas, grateful for Dr. Marion's many years of distinguished medical service, the South Carolina Senate takes great pleasure in extending him best wishes as he transitions to the leisurely pace of the days ahead and years of enjoyment in his well-earned retirement. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize and honor Dr. Henry James Marion upon the occasion of his retirement after thirty-seven years of exemplary service, and wish him continued success and happiness in his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Henry James Marion.
