A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE OLIVER "BUDDY" POUGH, HEAD FOOTBALL COACH OF SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY, FOR HIS OUTSTANDING COACHING CAREER AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM FOR SETTING THE SCHOOL'S RECORD FOR COACHING WINS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to recognize Coach Oliver "Buddy" Pough for his outstanding coaching career; and

Whereas, this season, Coach Pough became South Carolina State University's all-time winningest coach by coaching his one hundred twenty-ninth win. With the Bulldogs' victory over Morgan State University on October 19, 2019, Coach Pough surpassed the record set by his own former coach, the legendary Willie Jeffries; and

Whereas, prior to this outstanding coaching career, Coach Pough was an offensive lineman at Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School, where he played under notable South Carolina coach, Dick Sheridan, and South Carolina State University, under Coach Jeffries. He had a collegiate record of 129-73; and

Whereas, over the course of his long and successful coaching career, Coach Pough has served as assistant coach at Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School, South Carolina State University, and the University of South Carolina and as head coach at Keenan High School; Fairfield Central High School, where he led the Griffins to a 3A state championship; and South Carolina State University; and

Whereas, with South Carolina State University, he has served as head coach for eighteen seasons. Over the course of his storied career with the Bulldogs, he has set numerous records. This past year's accomplishments, which have garnered national attention, are the exclamation point on a standout career. Under his leadership this season, the Bulldogs finished 8-3 overall and 6-2 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play. Coach Pough led South Carolina State University to its seventeenth Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship overall and the seventh during his tenure; and

Whereas, given his many years of experience and expertise, Coach Pough has received a number of honors and awards, including The Times and Democrat's 2019 Person of the Year, three Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Coach of the Year awards, BOXTOROW Co-Coach of the Year, and high honors and awards from several community organizations; and

Whereas, a civic leader, Coach Pough's reach and impact extends off the football field into the Orangeburg community and across the nation. He is one of the founders of the Orangeburg Touchdown Club, which brings together Orangeburg and surrounding areas to recognize local high school football players. The organization has a significant impact on the community; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate appreciate the pride and recognition that Coach Oliver "Buddy" Pough has brought to the State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize Oliver "Buddy" Pough, head football coach of South Carolina State University, for his outstanding coaching career and congratulate him for setting the school's record for coaching wins.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Coach Oliver "Buddy" Pough.
