A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE HONORABLE JOHN CHARLES "CHUCK" SMITH UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT FROM AIKEN COUNTY COUNCIL, TO COMMEND HIM FOR HIS TWENTY YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE AS A COUNCILMAN, AND TO WISH HIM MUCH HAPPINESS AND FULFILLMENT IN THE YEARS TO COME.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to recognize the Honorable John Charles "Chuck" Smith upon the occasion of his retirement from Aiken County Council in November of 2020; and

Whereas, Councilman Smith is an alumnus of the University of Alabama, where he earned a bachelor's degree, and of Brenau College, where he earned a Master of Business Administration. He was also awarded an Accredited Asset Management Specialist designation by the College of Financial Planning; and

Whereas, a veteran of Desert Storm, Councilman Smith served in the United States Army as a lieutenant colonel; and

Whereas, with a successful business career, he has been a financial advisor with Edward Jones in North Augusta since 1992, with clients throughout the two-state region; and

Whereas, a dedicated public servant, Councilman Smith has represented District 4 on Aiken County Council since 2000; and

Whereas, during Councilman Smith's tenure, Aiken County Council has improved the quality of life for its citizens through a number of initiatives, including the Interstate 520 extension, the encouragement of business growth and interaction with the Savannah River Site, and dozens of projects financed through the county's local option sales tax initiatives. Councilman Smith also served as the lead for development on behalf of the county in successful efforts to finance Project Jackson, which is now known as North Augusta's Riverside Village; and

Whereas, an active civic leader, Councilman Smith is involved with a number of community organizations, including the Savannah River Site Community Re-Use Organization, Sertoma Club, Lions Club, and Rotary Club. He formerly served as chair of the Energy Communities Alliance, commander of American Legion Post 71, and chair of the North Augusta Forward Community Foundation; and

Whereas, over the years, Councilman Smith has received many awards, including the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, thirteen Edward Jones Managing Partner Awards, the Jack Phelan Award, and the 2001 North Augusta Small Business Person of the Year Award; and

Whereas, in his retirement from Aiken County Council, Councilman Smith will continue to advocate for his community, lend a hand, and play a significant role in the progress of Aiken County; and

Whereas, the South Carolina Senate is grateful for the passion, commitment, and dedication that Councilman Smith has shown in serving the people of Aiken County and South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate the Honorable John Charles "Chuck" Smith upon the occasion of his retirement from Aiken County Council, commend him for his twenty years of dedicated service as a councilman, and wish him happiness, success, and fulfillment in the years to come.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Honorable John Charles "Chuck" Smith.
