A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR PASTOR EDWARD J. SQUIRE FOR HIS DEDICATED SERVICE TO HIS COMMUNITY AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM FOR NEARLY TWENTY YEARS OF FAITHFUL SERVICE AS PASTOR OF MT. CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH IN HARTSVILLE.

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that Pastor Edward J. Squire has been serving for almost two decades as pastor of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church; and

Whereas, a native of Society Hill, Edward Squire was reared with seven brothers and one sister and is the oldest son of the late Charlena B. Squire and the late Julius E. Squire; and

Whereas, he attended Rosenwald Elementary School and graduated from Rosenwald High School in 1965, and he earned a degree from Florence Darlington Technical College in 1972. He attended Morris College School of Religion through the extension program at the Pee Dee Union site in Cheraw; and

Whereas, in the patriotic tradition of the sons of South Carolina, Mr. Squire served his country with distinction in the United States Army from 1967 to 1970, serving one year in Vietnam during the Vietnam War and two years in Anchorage, Alaska; and

Whereas, he was employed for twenty-eight years in management with Galey & Lord textile manufacturing, eight years with Eckerd Drug Company, and eight years with the Darlington County Magistrate's Office before retiring in 2014; and

Whereas, a life long member of the Bethesda Baptist Church in Society Hill where he served as a trustee, a deacon, the Sunday school superintendent, and treasurer, Pastor Squire accepted the call to preach and teach the gospel message of Jesus Christ in February 1990. He was licensed in April 1990 by his church family; and

Whereas, in April 1991, he was ordained by the Pee Dee Baptist Association and subsequently served as pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church in Bennettsville for two years; and

Whereas, almost twenty years ago, Pastor Squire accepted a call to pastor Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Hartsville, where he has been ever since. A member of the Hartsville Ministerial Alliance, he served his denomination as first vice moderator of the Darlington County Missionary Union and as a statistician of Pee Dee Baptist Association and a board member of its Educational Department; and

Whereas, for fourteen years, he served as a councilman for the Town of Society Hill and four years on the board of the Darlington Council on Aging, and he has currently been serving over twenty-five years on the board of directors of Care South Carolina; and

Whereas, together with his beloved wife, the former Barbara L. James, Pastor Squire reared two fine sons, Edward O. and Michael L., and has been blessed to see the continuation of his loving family legacy in his four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and

Whereas, he enjoys reading, listening to gospel music, working with his hands, bird watching, talking with people, and having fun with his grands and great-grands; and

Whereas, a born-again Christian, Pastor Squire loves to preach, teach, and share the good news of Jesus Christ, and the Scripture text that has sustained him through the years says, "The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?" Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Pastor Edward J. Squire for his dedicated service to his community and congratulate him for nearly twenty years of faithful service as pastor of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Hartsville.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Pastor Edward J. Squire.
