A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE ANNIE MAE SHAW, A NATIVE OF CLARENDON COUNTY, ON THE OCCASION OF HER ONE HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY AND TO WISH HER A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND MANY YEARS OF CONTINUED HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is delighted to learn that Annie Mae Shaw will celebrate her one hundredth birthday surrounded by her loving family and many friends on April 13, 2019; and

Whereas, those who gather to wish her an especially happy birthday will celebrate her beautiful life, her accomplishments, and her service to her family, church, community, and State and to rejoice in the longevity with which God has blessed her; and

Whereas, born on April 13, 1919, in the early part of the twentieth century, she has witnessed many remarkable social changes, technological advancements, and international conflicts that have spanned the globe from that time into the second decade of the twenty-first century; and

Whereas, born in Clarendon County, Ms. Shaw is the daughter of the late Mr. John Davis and Mrs. Hattie Goodman McFadden. She reared five fine children and was blessed with the affection of eleven loving grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren, and fifty-nine great-great-grandchildren; and

Whereas, she was an activist in 1954 when Thurgood Marshall filed the first case for Brown v. Board of Education, Briggs v. Elliott, that was struck down by the Supreme Court but was overturned two years later; and

Whereas, physically and mentally active, Ms. Shaw still likes to can foods and to cook for and spend time with her family and friends; and

Whereas, a faithful church member since her youth, Ms. Shaw continues to attend church every Sunday and to serve joyfully as the Matriarch of her church, Oak Grove African Methodist Episcopal Church. She has been a constant presence there, serving in almost every capacity, particularly in the Gospel Choir, the Pastor's Aide Society, the usher board, and the stewardess committee; and

Whereas, Ms. Shaw understands that the main purpose for her longevity is to serve, honor, and worship the Lord as she trusts in Him with her whole heart and sings her favorite song, "I Am Alright Now"; and

Whereas, without a license or formal training, she taught a sort of mathematics through her example, not in a school classroom but in her community, when she added the values of love and hard work to her life; subtracted a can't-do attitude from her mind; multiplied these concepts in her home, church, and community; and divided them among her children; and

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to honor this daughter of South Carolina at the celebration of her one hundredth birthday, and the members join with her family and friends in congratulating her on reaching this extraordinary milestone. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Annie Mae Shaw, a native of Clarendon County, on the occasion of her one hundredth birthday and wish her a joyous birthday celebration and many years of continued health and happiness.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Annie Mae Shaw.
