A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE WANDO HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING BAND, DIRECTORS, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS ON AN OUTSTANDING SEASON AND TO HONOR THEM FOR WINNING THE BAND'S TWELFTH SOUTH CAROLINA 5A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

Whereas, the South Carolina Senate is proud to recognize the Wando High School Marching Band for winning the South Carolina 5A State Marching Band Competition on Saturday, November 2, 2019 at Irmo High School; and

Whereas, at the competition, Wando performed Absentia, achieving an overall finals score of 95.65 and receiving top marks in every caption category for music performance, visual performance, and overall effect; and

Whereas, prior to the state competition, Wando placed third at the Bands of America Regionals in Orlando, Florida out of twenty-two marching bands that competed from around the Southeast and Midwest; and

Whereas, this historic win marks Wando High School Marching Band's twelfth South Carolina 5A State Championship and breaks the previous state record for the most championships held by any South Carolina 5A high school marching band; and

Whereas, only nine of Wando's championship wins were in a row, because the band did not participate in the state championship in 2014, 2016, and 2018, instead participating in the Bands of America Grand National, where it was named a Top-12 Finalist at each appearance and, in 2018, placed sixth overall; and

Whereas, the Wando High School Marching Band currently flourishes under the direction of Bobby Lambert, Lanie Radecke, and Jeff Handel. Michael Gray serves as the Program Coordinator for the Wando Marching Band, Tim Cole as Visual Caption Head, and Sarah Price as the Director of Color Guard; and

Whereas, this championship win represents the hard work and imagination of students, families, and staff over many years; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate appreciate the pride and recognition that the Wando High School Marching Band has brought to its school and community and look forward to a future filled with further accomplishments by the band and its talented students. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate the Wando High School Marching Band, directors, and school officials on an outstanding season and honor them for winning the band's twelfth South Carolina 5A State Championship.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Wando High School Marching Band, directors, and school officials.
