TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE PASSING OF DR. ETHEL LOUISE SAUNDERS NEWMAN OF MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA, AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER LOVING FAMILY AND HER MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Ethel Louise Saunders Newman at the age of seventy-three on January 7, 2021; and

Whereas, born in Washington, D. C., on April 5, 1947, she was the oldest of two children of the late Exum Tecumseh Saunders and Willetta Louise Shuffer Saunders; and

Whereas, young Ethel accepted Christ at an early age and dedicated herself to a Christian life, to her family, and to the betterment of her community; and

Whereas, she and her beloved husband of fifty-three years, Thomas A. Newman, Jr., reared two fine daughters, Dr. Kelley Newman Moore and Monica Newman McCluney. Her children blessed her with the affection of three grandchildren: Kendall T. Moore II, Kaelyn Alexandra Moore, and William James McCluney; and

Whereas, Mrs. Newman graduated from McKinley Technology High School in Washington, D. C., and earned a Bachelor of Science cum laude in speech pathology from the District of Columbia Teachers College; and

Whereas, she earned a Master of Arts in educational administration from George Washington University and spent nearly fifteen years as an educator and speech pathologist with the Washington, D. C., public schools; and

Whereas, Mrs. Newman chose to alter her professional direction by enrolling in the Howard University College of Dentistry where she earned a Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS). After a general practice residency at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, she began fifteen years as an associate professor in the College of Dentistry at Howard University with the Department of Fixed Prosthodontics and Restorative Dentistry and as an assistant professor and director of the Health Care Ethics Program in the College of Medicine with the Department of Community Health and Family Practice; and

Whereas, among her many accomplishments as an educator, Dr. Newman served as co-principal investigator for a landmark conference on Death and Dying from an African American Perspective; and

Whereas, while a dental educator, Dr. Newman maintained a private dental practice. Following her first retirement, Dr. Newman and her husband relocated to Merritt Island, Florida, where she was honored to serve as the academic dean in health sciences at Eastern Florida State College. She was promoted to provost of the college, serving for ten years on the Cocoa, Palm Bay, and Titusville campuses; and

Whereas, she was dedicated to serving her community in Washington, D.C.; Maryland; and Florida. A faithful member of the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, she was a serving member in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated; The Links, Incorporated; NAACP; National Dental Association; Rotary International; Wuesthoff Hospital Ethics Committee; American Red Cross; Cocoa Beach Regional and Greater Palm Bay Chambers of Commerce; and Community Services Council / Aging Matters; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the life and legacy of Dr. Ethel Newman and for the example of service and excellence she set for all who knew her. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Dr. Ethel Louise Saunders Newman of Merritt Island, Florida, and extend their deepest sympathy to her loving family and her many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dr. Ethel Louise Saunders Newman.
