A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE PASSING OF JUDITH MANESS ALLEN OF COLUMBIA, TO CELEBRATE HER LIFE, AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were deeply saddened by the passing of Judith Maness Allen of Columbia on February 24, 2021, at the venerable age of seventy-nine; and

Whereas, born the daughter of James Sherman Maness and Zelma Craven Maness in Asheboro, North Carolina, Judy came into this world on March 16, 1941. She grew up in Ramseur, North Carolina, in a nurturing Christian home. She spent her youth in a joyful environment of family, school, church, and community, graduating from Ramseur High School in 1959; and

Whereas, in preparation for her career, she graduated with honors from Elon College with a bachelor's degree in elementary education and began teaching in Asheboro, North Carolina, where she served as a primary-grade teacher for four years; and

Whereas, in 1965, Judy married Harvey Allen, and two years later the couple moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Both earned advanced degrees in the College of Education at the University of North Carolina. While in Chapel Hill, Judy taught for two years in the Chapel Hill school system; and

Whereas, in 1969, Judy and Harvey moved to Columbia, where Harvey had accepted a faculty position in the University of South Carolina College of Education. That same year, Judy became the proud mother of her firstborn, Harvey Addison Allen, Jr. ("Andy"). She relished being a stay-at-home mother, and in 1974, when James Cory Allen was born, Judy delighted in becoming a proud mother once again. In the years that followed, Judy participated in a wide variety of university, community, school, and church activities. She was very active in the University Women's Club of the University of South Carolina for over forty-five years (president, 1980-81); and

Whereas, she returned to teaching at Forest Lake Elementary School when Cory was in middle school and Andy was in high school. She indicated two main reasons for her return to the classroom, the first being her love of teaching young children, the second being her desire to earn advance money for college tuition. The wisdom of this decision was evidenced when both Andy and Cory attended, and graduated from, Duke University. She loved being a Duke parent. Andy and Cory put their educations to good use, with Andy beginning his career with the South Carolina House of Representatives in 1994. During this return to teaching, she was honored by membership in the Alpha Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International; and

Whereas, of all her activities outside the home, Judy derived the greatest satisfaction out of serving as a dedicated member of Shandon United Methodist Church. She enjoyed the Shandon Book Club and was involved in many activities of the United Methodist Women. A Sunday School teacher for over forty years, she also served on numerous committees and took part in various service projects. She especially treasured her membership in the Ola B. Taylor Circle. Inside the home, Judy experienced the grandest of joys when she became a "grammy." She delighted in her granddaughter, Emily Allen; and her grandson, Max Allen; and

Whereas, Judy leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Harvey; her sons, Harvey Addison Allen, Jr., and James Cory Allen (Jane); her granddaughter, Emily; her grandson, Max; and a host of other family members and friends. She will be missed. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Judith Maness Allen of Columbia, celebrate her life, and extend the deepest sympathy to her family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Harvey Allen for the family.
