A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE JANUARY 2022 AS "FIREFIGHTER CANCER AWARENESS MONTH" IN SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, fire fighters serve our community by putting our safety above their own, often working in a toxic environment of smoke, soot and other carcinogens; and

Whereas, fire fighters have a nine percent greater chance of being diagnosed with cancer and a fourteen percent greater chance of dying from cancer than the general population. Occupational cancer is the leading cause of line-of-duty death in professional fire fighters and has reached epidemic levels; and

Whereas, fire fighters, in their service to their communities, sacrificially endanger their own health in order to save lives. Studies have found a direct correlation between the chemical exposures fire fighters experience and an increased risk for cancer; and

Whereas, the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) and the Firefighter Cancer Support Network (FCSN) have declared January as Fire Fighter Cancer Awareness Month. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize January 2021 as "Fire Fighter Cancer Awareness Month" in South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the South Carolina State Firefighters Association.
