A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE PASSING OF DR. ROSE WILDER OF WILLIAMSBURG COUNTY AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER LOVING FAMILY AND HER MANY FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were saddened to learn of the death of former Williamsburg County School District Superintendent Dr. Rose Wilder on Tuesday, August 30, 2022; and

Whereas, an educator for more than twenty-five years, Dr. Wilder was appointed as superintendent in Clarendon School District Two in 1994, becoming the first Black woman superintendent in the State since Reconstruction; and

Whereas, for two decades she served as the Clarendon County School District Two superintendent, earning numerous awards, including an Outstanding Superintendent award from the South Carolina School Boards Association in 1999 and Superintendent of the Year for the State of South Carolina during the 2013-2014 school year; and

Whereas, in 2018, Dr. Wilder was appointed state designee of Williamsburg County School District, where she supervised the successful transformation of Williamsburg County School District finances, special education services, and academic improvements after the South Carolina Department of Education had declared the district to be in a state of emergency; and

Whereas, she was honored by the State Legislature through Senate resolutions in March 2020 and in May 2020, and the Clarendon School District One Board of Trustees voted to rename St. Paul Elementary School in Summerton in her honor; and

Whereas, it was announced earlier in 2022 that Dr. Wilder, a legend in education, would move into a role as an educational consultant; and

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is grateful for the life and legacy of Rose Wilder and for the example of service and excellence she set for all who knew her, and the members appreciate that her legacy will continue through the lives of students and staff, as well as the communities, she impacted. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Dr. Rose Wilder of Williamsburg County and extend their deepest sympathy to her loving family and her many friends and colleagues.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dr. Rose Wilder.
