The committee on House Invitations and Memorial Resolutions

To whom was referred a Concurrent Resolution (S. 1297) to request that the Department of Transportation name the intersection of Boundary Street and the South Carolina Highway 34 Bypass (Bob Lake Boulevard) in Newberry, etc., respectfully

That they have duly and carefully considered the same, and recommend that the same do pass:

A concurrent RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME the intersection of Boundary Street and the South carolina highway 34 Bypass (Bob Lake Boulevard) IN newberry COUNTY "henry s. reeder intersection" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS AT THIS LOCATION CONTAINING THE DESIGNATION.

Whereas, a native of Newberry, Mr. Reeder is an alumnus of Allen University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1962, and of the University of South Carolina, where he earned his master's degree in 1974; and

Whereas, Mr. Reeder served for nine years as a teacher and twenty-four years as an elementary school principal, totaling thirty-three years in the education field; and

Whereas, Mr. Reeder has served with many community organizations, including as a member of the Masonic Lodge Meridian No. 9 and as a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity; and

Whereas, a civic leader, Mr. Reeder has served as chairman of the Newberry County Hospital Board of Trustees, the board of directors for the Beckman Center of Mental Health, and the Newberry City Planning Commission; and

Whereas, Mr. Reeder also served as president of the Newberry County Education Association and the Allen University Alumni Club of Newberry. He was an executive committeeman of the Ward 4 Precinct for over thirty years and was an original member of the Newberry County Transportation Committee, where he served from 1993 until his recent retirement in 2023; and

Whereas, a pioneer in his community, Mr. Reeder was the first African American to serve in many of his leadership positions; and

Whereas, over the years, Mr. Reeder has received a number of honors and awards, including the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Community Legacy Award. He was appointed by the governor to the South Carolina Governor's School for Math and Science Board of Trustees, where he served from 2000 to 2003; and

Whereas, a devout Christian, he is a member of Miller Chapel A.M.E. Church; and

Whereas, Mr. Reeder is married to the former Betty Ruff, and together, they have four children, Henry, Jr., Travis, Lavette, and Yonnie; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate greatly appreciate the dedication and commitment that Mr. Reeder has shown in serving the people and the State of South Carolina. It would be only fitting and proper to pay tribute to this son of South Carolina by naming a portion of road in the State in his honor. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, request that the Department of Transportation name the intersection of Boundary Street and the South Carolina Highway 34 bypass (Bob Lake Boulevard) in Newberry County "Henry S. Reeder Intersection" and erect appropriate markers or signs at this location containing the designation.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation and presented to Henry Reeder.
