A house RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE Porter-Gaud School BOYS tennis team, COACHES, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS FOR A STELLAR SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR WINNING THE 2023 SOUTH CAROLINA Independent School Association CLASS 4A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that the members of the Porter-Gaud tennis team of Charleston County recaptured the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA) state title, after a four-year hiatus, at the state tournament on May 4, 2023; and

Whereas, to the delight of their faithful fans, the Porter-Gaud Cyclones defeated a fine, competitive Trinity Collegiate 6-0 to reclaim their triple tiara from state championship victories between 2017 and 2019; and

Whereas, Porter-Gaud finished the season with a 10-3 record, losing to tennis forces at Oceanside Collegiate and Hilton Head Prep during the regular season; and

Whereas, in the title tournament, five of the six singles performers won in straight sets, and the other win was a third-set tie-breaker; and

Whereas, a varsity team member for six years, senior Lucas Acevedo won at No. 1 singles and played on the 2017 state title team as a sixth grader. This fine athlete plays on the golf team and was the SCISA state medalist two weeks prior to the tennis finals; and

Whereas, other senior starters for Porter-Gaud, Ethan Curb won at No. 3, and Jimmy Letton won at No. 6.  Freshman Bryce Bunting took No. 2 singles, and sophomores Evan Curb and Nirvaan Patel captured four and five singles, respectively; and

Whereas, in a sport that demands speed, strength, and agility, Head Coach Tracey Zirneklis and assistant coaches Tim Higgins, Patrick Brown, Miller Brice, and Paul Baran maximized their own athletic experience and training to mold a championship-caliber team and teach these athletes lessons that will prove invaluable through life both on and off the courts; and

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is grateful for the pride and recognition that the Porter-Gaud tennis players have brought to their school and their community, and the members look forward to following their continued achievements in the days ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Porter-Gaud School boys tennis team, coaches, and school officials for a stellar season and congratulate them for winning the 2023 South Carolina Independent School Association Class 4A State Championship title.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to D. DuBose Egleston, Jr., Head of School, and to Coach Tracey Zirneklis.
