A concurrent RESOLUTION

 

TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME the intersection of Highway 15 and browntown road IN lee COUNTY "wallace a. 'bull' berry intersection" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS AT THIS LOCATION CONTAINING THE DESIGNATION.

 

Whereas, Wallace A. "Bull" Berry was born on September 28, 1923, in Bishopville. He was a top-ranked baseball player in the State and attended Presbyterian College on a baseball scholarship; and

 

Whereas, a veteran of the United States Army, Mr. Berry's college career was interrupted by his service in World War II. After his proud service, he returned to college, graduated, and then played baseball for a brief time with the Cincinnati Reds; and

 

Whereas, after his own baseball career, went on to coach baseball at Aiken High School. There he met his wife, Ruth Inabinet; and

 

Whereas, Mr. Berry returned to Bishopville with his wife in 1956 to begin a career in farming. His farm, W.A. Berry & Sons, became the top cotton producer and one of the top peanut producers in the State during the 1980s and 1990s. Mr. Berry's career as a farmer spanned from 1956 to 2009; and

 

Whereas, a civic leader, Mr. Berry was also very active in his community. He was instrumental in helping bring commercial and industrial properties to Bishopville, including the Food Lion that is there today. He also helped develop houses around town throughout the 1960s; and

 

Whereas, Mr. Berry passed away on February 9. 2018. He is survived by his son, Russell "Rusty" Berry, and his granddaughter, Hilary Berry; and

 

Whereas, Mr. Berry was a well-respected person in the community who loved his county and worked for its prosperity. It would be only fitting and proper to pay tribute to this son of South Carolina by naming a portion of road in the State in his honor.  Now, therefore,

 

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

 

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, request that the Department of Transportation name the intersection of Highway 15 and Browntown Road in Lee County "Wallace A. 'Bull' Berry Intersection" and erect appropriate markers or signs at this location containing the designation.

 

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation and presented to the family of Wallace A. Berry.
