A concurrent RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME the portion of Highway 78 from the bamberg county line to the Aiken county line the "Lonnie Hosey Purple Heart Highway" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS AT THIS LOCATION CONTAINING THE DESIGNATION.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are pleased to recognize Representative Lonnie Hosey for his dedicated service to the people of South Carolina; and

Whereas, Representative Hosey was born on December 1, 1946. He is an alumnus of Voorhees College, where he earned his associate's degree in 1975 and his bachelor's degree in 1978. He worked for many years as a university administrator; and

Whereas, a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Representative Hosey served during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1969; and

Whereas, during his military service, Representative Hosey was awarded the Purple Heart, the nation's oldest and one of the most distinguished military honors, given to those wounded or killed as a result of enemy action while serving in the United States Military, for his sacrifice and bravery in action; and

Whereas, Representative Hosey's commitment to service did not end with his military duty, as he has continued to serve his community and the State of South Carolina through public office and civic leadership. Representative Hosey has served in the South Carolina House of Representatives since 1999, representing the 91st District of Barnwell County for over twenty-seven years; and

Whereas, in addition to his service with the House of Representatives, Representative Hosey has served with many community organizations, including as chairman for the Barnwell County Democratic Party, president of the Greenbranch Christian Benevolent Society, Most Worshipful Grand Master of Prince Hall Masons of the State of South Carolina; and a member of the Barnwell-Blackville Branch NAACP; and

Whereas, a devout Christian, Representative Hosey is a member of St. Thomas Grove Missionary Baptist Church; and

Whereas, Representative Hosey is married to Doris Creech, and together, they had one child, the late Donnie Darell Hosey; and

Whereas, it would be only fitting and proper to pay tribute to this son of South Carolina by naming a portion of road in the State in his honor.  Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, request that the Department of Transportation name the portion of Highway 78 beginning at the Bamberg County line and extending to the Aiken County line as the "Lonnie Hosey Purple Heart Highway" and erect appropriate markers or signs at this location containing the designation.
