VERSIONS OF THIS BILL

A senate RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE The walhalla chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American revolution UPON THE OCCASION OF ITS one hundred tenth ANNIVERSARY AND TO COMMEND the Chapter FOR ITS MANY YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE Oconee County COMMUNITY AND THE PEOPLE AND THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to recognize the Walhalla Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) as it celebrates this important milestone; and

Whereas, the NSDAR was established in Washington, D. C. in 1890 to promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism. The requirement for acceptance was to prove direct ancestral lineage to an American Revolutionary War patriot; and

Whereas, women of Walhalla began organizing the formation of a NSDAR chapter in July 1916. The first regular meeting of the Walhalla Chapter, NSDAR was held at the home of Mrs. W. D. Moss on October 10, 1916, with sixteen original members; and

Whereas, in the same year of the chapter's founding, a member donated land for the beginning of Tamassee DAR School (now Tamassee Hope Village), a school for disadvantaged children of Appalachia which has served as a residential and day school for over a century; and

Whereas, the Walhalla Chapter, NSDAR has been crucial in preserving the legacy of the American Revolution in Oconee County. Over the years, the chapter has erected a marker for Revolutionary War hero, Andrew Pickens, and marked patriot graves with official Revolutionary War soldier markers, living up to the chapter's motto, "The noble deeds of our ancestors are placed in the memory of the living;"and

Whereas, today, the chapter boasts one hundred twenty-two members and is very active in the Oconee County community. The chapter founded and currently co-sponsors a golf tournament to support Tamassee Hope Village and a Memorial Day program in conjunction with the Oconee County Office of Veterans Affairs. The chapter also supports other charitable organizations, such as Oconee County BabyRead, a local children's hospital, and Wreaths Across America; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate greatly appreciate the dedication, patriotism, and commitment of the Walhalla Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution to serving the people and the State of South Carolina.  Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate the Walhalla Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution upon the occasion of its one hundred tenth anniversary and commend the chapter for its many years of dedicated service to the Oconee County community and the people and the State of South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the regent of the Walhalla Chapter, NSDAR, Sandy Lawson.
