A senate RESOLUTION

 

TO CONGRATULATE AND HONOR NED SHOWS FOR FORTY YEARS OF VOLUNTEER WORK WITH MEALS ON WHEELS SUMMERVILLE, AND FOR HIS MANY YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE WITHIN THE SUMMERVILLE COMMUNITY.

 

Whereas, Ned Shows has dedicated his life to serving his community. He has spent the last forty years volunteering three days a week with Meals on Wheels Summerville, delivering meals and building relationships with those in need; and

 

Whereas, Mr. Shows and his late wife, Nancy, moved to Summerville in the early 1970s, after he was honorably discharged from the Navy. Mrs. Shows undertook leadership roles within many Summerville nonprofits, including Carolina Lowcountry Girl Scout Council, Trident United Way, Trident Literacy Association, the YMCA of Summerville, and Meals on Wheels Summerville. Mr. Shows credits his wife for getting him involved with Meals on Wheels; and

 

Whereas, when Mr. Shows retired in 1988, he began delivering meals three days a week, alongside his wife. Meals on Wheels Summerville has grown tremendously since its founding in 1982 and now serves over 1,300 meals per week. More than a dozen drivers are responsible for twenty-two routes, delivering food every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday with the help of over two hundred volunteers. His wife accompanied him on deliveries until she passed in 2021, and Mr. Shows continued to serve his community by delivering meals both for himself and to honor the woman who initially inspired his participation; and

 

Whereas, in addition to his service with Meals on Wheel Summerville, Mr. Shows also volunteered with other organizations. He regularly helped out at the Sertoma (SERvice TO MAnkind) Club, coached Little League Football, taught AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) Safe Driver courses and lent a hand to Habitat for Humanity; and

 

Whereas, although Mr. Shows is stepping back from Meals on Wheels deliveries, he continues to devote his time to supporting his community. He makes bluebird birdhouses in his backyard workshop, which he donates to the Lions Club, of which he is member, to be sold at the Summerville Farmer's Market. He enjoys spending time on other projects in this workshop, such as crafting pig-shaped cutting boards that he gives to people around town. He regularly gives to blessing boxes around Summerville and is a member at Summerville Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir; and

 

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are grateful for Ned Shows' many years of outstanding volunteer service within his community and congratulate him on forty years of loyal service to Meals on Wheels Summerville. Now, therefore,

 

Be it resolved by the Senate:

 

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate and honor Ned Shows for forty years of volunteer work with Meals on Wheels Summerville, and for his many years of dedicated service within the Summerville community.

 

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Ned Shows.
