A house RESOLUTION

To celebrate the historic chartering of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. at Wofford College and to wish them much success as they carry out the sorority's mission to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, and to be of service to all mankind.

Whereas, founded in 1854, Wofford College is a distinguished liberal arts institution in Spartanburg that voluntarily desegregated in 1964 and expanded opportunities for Black women in the early 1970s; and

Whereas, in 1973, Janice Brewton Means became the first African American woman to graduate from Wofford, establishing a legacy of excellence carried forward by generations of high-achieving Black women scholars; and

Whereas, Greek life is central to campus leadership and engagement, yet until now, no National Pan-Hellenic Council sorority has held a chartered collegiate presence at Wofford; and

Whereas, since 1980, Wofford has maintained a meaningful relationship with the Epsilon Beta Omega Graduate Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. with dedicated members and college leaders working faithfully to bring a chartered chapter to campus. This storied sorority has a history of firsts that stem from its founding as the first intercollegiate historically Black sorority founded on January 15, 1908, at Howard University in Washington, D.C. In 1939, it became the first organization to take a life membership in the NAACP earning another distinction as a trailblazer. In 2025, Alpha Kappa Alpha had more than 365,000 members in 1,085 chapters in the United States and eleven other countries; and

Whereas, on March 22, 2026, through the leadership of the Honorable Tiffany Moore Russell Esq. 20th South Atlantic Regional Director, and in partnership with Wofford College and Epsilon Beta Omega Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. was officially chartered at Wofford College, becoming the first National Pan-Hellenic Council sorority established on campus; and

Whereas, these seventeen charter members will carry forward a legacy of sisterhood that is, and will remain, sincere and rare. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, celebrate the historic chartering of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. at Wofford College and wish them much success as they carry out the sorority's mission to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, and to be of service to all mankind.
