A senate RESOLUTION
TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR Celia S. Price for, at the age of ninety-four, having served on the colleton county Board of Voter Registration and Elections for twenty years, making her the oldest and longest-serving Member of the board.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to recognize Celia S. Price for being the oldest and longest-serving member of the Board of Voter Registration and Elections. At the age of ninety-four, she has served since 2005; and
Whereas, a native of the Mashawville Community of Colleton County, Mrs. Price was born on November 12, 1930, to parents Melvin and Violet Stanfield and with siblings Esther Stanfield Black, Frances Stanfield Young, Patricia Dianne Stanfield Gadson, and Joseph J. Stanfield. She is an alumna of South Carolina State College, where she graduated in 1951 with a degree in liberal arts and where she pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; and
Whereas, Mrs. Price began her career as a teacher in Jasper County for one year before moving on to teach elementary school at Colleton Training School for two years. She then enrolled at the University of Georgia in Athens, where she received her Education Specialist degree from the University of Georgia; and
Whereas, Mrs. Price returned to Colleton County to teach and went on to teach a total of forty-three years in the public schools of South Carolina; and
Whereas, an entrepreneur, Mrs. Price and her husband owned a restaurant called Snack Land in Walterboro. Their desire was to help create jobs for the African American community; and
Whereas, a civic leader, Mrs. Price is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; Gamma Xi Omega Chapter, with whom she recently received her Diamond Pin for her seventy-five years of service; Lowcountry Ladies, who give an average of ten scholarships per year to students in Beaufort, Colleton, Jasper, and Hampton Counties; Martin Luther King Jr. Assembly #349-Order of the Golden Circle; Lowcountry Quilters; the South Carolina State Alumni Association; the Order of Eastern Star, with whom she served as treasurer and received a fifty-year certificate; and the Colleton County Education Association-Retired, with whom she currently serves as chaplain; and
Whereas, in addition to her civic leadership and service, Mrs. Price is the oldest and longest-serving member of the Colleton County Board of Voter Registration and Elections. She was appointed in 2005 by the late Senator McKinley Washington and has been continuously reappointed each year by the delegation; and
Whereas, a devout Christian, she attended Isaiah United Methodist Church as a child. She is now a member of Hopewell Presbyterian Church in Walterboro, where she began attending after marriage to her husband. She has served as the president of the Presbyterian Women's Organization, a Sunday school teacher, and a Presbyterian elder; and
Whereas, Mrs. Price was married to the late Benjamin E. Price, who passed away in 2002. She helped her husband raise his two sons, Hewlett Price and Benjamin E. Price Jr.; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate greatly appreciate the dedication and commitment that Mrs. Price has shown in serving the voters of Colleton County and the people and the State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize and honor Celia S. Price for, at the age of ninety-four, having served on the Colleton County Board of Voter Registration and Elections for twenty years, making her the oldest and longest-serving member of the board.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Celia S. Price.
