A senate RESOLUTION
TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR deacon isaiah mckendly covert.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to recognize Isaiah McKendly Covert for his service and dedication; and
Whereas, a native of Salters, Mr. Covert was born on August 8, 1939, to parents Henry and Lillie Covert. He is an alumnus of Friendship Junior College, where he received his Associate of Arts degree. He then went on to attend Allen University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Studies; and
Whereas, a veteran of the United States Army, Mr. Covert was stationed in Seoul, South Korea, where he served in the 7th Division as a professor education advisor. His military service continued at Fort Benning in Columbus, Georgia, where he worked in the Office of Personnel; and
Whereas, after completing his military service, Mr. Covert earned his Master of Arts in Education from South Carolina State University in Orangeburg. He then began his long and impactful career in education with the Williamsburg County School District. He first taught at Lane Consolidated Elementary School as a physical education teacher. A lifelong learner, he also attended Manpower Technical School (now Williamsburg Technical College), where he studied electricity; and
Whereas, Mr. Covert's career continued with notable roles at St. Mark High School as an English teacher, at Blakely High School, and at CE Murray High School, where he became a Special Education teacher. Throughout his time at these schools, Mr. Covert made a significant impact on the lives of countless students. He retired in 1997 after thirty years of dedicated service to the district, leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication to education; and
Whereas, a civic leader, Mr. Covert has served with many community organizations, including as an active member of the Square Deal #448 Masonic Lodge, where he served as Worshipful Master from 1983 to 1990. He is also a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, which further reflects his commitment to leadership and service; and
Whereas, a devout Christian, he is a member of Marion Missionary Baptist Church, where he has served as a deacon, vice chairman of the Deacon Board, Sunday school superintendent, and Sunday school teacher. He has also served as the president of the Welfare Committee, the Budget Committee, and the Brotherhood Committee; and
Whereas, Mr. Covert is married to Neomia Burroughs, and together, they have five children, Vonzella, Doyle, Denise, Brittany, and the late Brandon; and seven grandchildren; and
Whereas, in his free time, he enjoys entrepreneurial pursuits related to taxes, landscaping, and farming; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate greatly appreciate the dedication and commitment that Mr. Covert has shown in serving the people and the State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize and honor Isaiah McKendly Covert.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Isaiah McKendly Covert.
