A senate RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR the Prince Hall Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to recognize the Prince Hall Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star for their generous charitable efforts to support the people of South Carolina; and

Whereas, established in 1850 by attorney and educator Rob Morris, a former Freemason official, the Order of the Eastern Star is the largest fraternal organization in the world open to both men and women. The order is based on teachings from the Bible but is open to people of all religious beliefs; and

Whereas, the Grand Chapter was organized by Dr. Charles Catlett Johnson and other interested Free and Accepted Masons of South Carolina and their wives during that year. Dr. Johnson was the Most Worshipful Grand Master for the jurisdiction of South Carolina at that time; and

Whereas, the Grand Chapter has a history of strong leadership, with seventeen Grand Worthy Matrons, the current of whom is Grand Worthy Matron Mary M. Ennis, and fifteen Grand Worthy Patrons, the current of whom is Grand Worthy Patron Brother Jermaine C. Nowline; and

Whereas, in addition to providing scholarship funds, the Grand Chapter supports numerous charities, including back-to-school drives, coat drives, food giveaways, walks and marches supporting research for Alzheimer's, sickle cell anemia, breast cancer awareness, visits to schools as classroom buddies, and blessing boxes, among others; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate greatly appreciate the dedication and commitment that the Prince Hall Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star has shown in serving the people and the State of South Carolina.  Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Prince Hall Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Grand Worthy Matron Mary M. Ennis and Grand Worthy Patron Brother Jermaine C. Nowline of the Prince Hall Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
