A senate RESOLUTION

 

TO CONGRATULATE Charles K. Doolittle, Inc. UPON THE OCCASION its fiftieth ANNIVERSARY AND TO COMMEND the company FOR ITS MANY YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE newberry COMMUNITY AND THE PEOPLE AND THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

 

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to recognize Charles K. Doolittle, Inc. as it celebrates this important milestone; and

 

Whereas, Charles K. Doolittle, Inc. is a forestry logging firm specializing in harvesting timber for lumber and pulp products. Located in Newberry, the company has registered foresters on staff who have provided quality work throughout the company's history; and

 

Whereas, the founder of Charles K. Doolittle, Inc., Charles Kenneth Doolittle, was born on April 24, 1944, to the late Ray C. "Doc" and Ola Mae Berley Doolittle; and

 

Whereas, a lifelong member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, Mr. Doolittle served as a founding member of the United Methodist Men, as chair of the Trustees, as vice chairman and chairman of the Administrative Board, and as a member of the finance, Pastor Parish, and van committees; and

 

Whereas, a veteran of the United States Air Force, Mr. Doolittle served faithfully for four years. He also served on the South Carolina Forestry Commission Newberry County Forestry Board, and he was a member of the Pomaria Masonic Lodge #151 and the American Legion Post24; and

 

Whereas, Mr. Doolittle's interest in timber harvesting began early in life as he assisted in his father's logging operation. He later established Charles K. Doolittle, Inc., of Newberry, and was joined in the business by his wife, Lou, and their sons Michael, John, and Travis; and

 

Whereas, Mr. Doolittle had a proud history of service with the South Carolina Forestry Association, serving on the Board of Directors, chairing the Timber Harvesting Task Force and Logging Advisory Committee, and serving on the inaugural Logging Safety Committee. He received the Forestry Association's Outstanding Logger of the Year Award in 1986 for exemplary harvesting practices and willingness to go above the call of duty; and

 

Whereas, Mr. Doolittle was an entrepreneur at heart and was the first to ship a box car of sawdust from Fairfield County to Westvaco Corporation. He always credited his early success to hard work and being a man of one's word, stating that "a bad reputation is hard to outlive." It was this dedication to the South Carolina Forestry Industry that earned him the nickname "Woodchuck"; and

 

Whereas, Mr. Doolittle grew his company from its formation into a pillar of the community. The company now employs one hundred thirty individuals and contracts with other companies to best serve the State of South Carolina. At the time of his passing, Mr. Doolittle left the ownership and daily operations of the company equally to his surviving sons and the remainder to his wife; and

 

Whereas, a family man, Mr. Doolittle loved his family deeply and was inspired by his love for them to work diligently and consistently to provide for and protect them. Mr. Doolittle was proud of the company he and his wife developed but even more proud of his family, stating on numerous occasions his desire that "the family stay together." The family has continued to grow since his passing, including the additions of many great-grandchildren; and

 

Whereas, representatives of Charles K. Doolittle, Inc. have been active members of the community, involved in the SC SFI State Implementation Committee, the Newberry Co. Forest Landowners Association, the SC Timber Producers Association, and Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. Representatives of the company have also been active with SC Log A Load For Kids, volunteering with and financially supporting hospitals affiliated with the Children's Miracle Network; and

 

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate greatly appreciate the dedication and commitment of Charles K. Doolittle, Inc. to serving the people and the State of South Carolina.  Now, therefore,

 

Be it resolved by the Senate:

 

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate Charles K. Doolittle, Inc. upon the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary and commend the company for its many years of dedicated service to the Newberry community and the people and the State of South Carolina.

 

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the owner of Charles K. Doolittle, Inc.
