A senate RESOLUTION

 

TO CONGRATULATE THE JOURNAL FOR WINNING SEVERAL SOUTH CAROLINA PRESS ASSOCIATION AWARDS, INCLUDING THE TOP AWARD IN GENERAL EXCELLENCE for a third consecutive year.

 

Whereas, the South Carolina Senate is pleased to learn that The Journal has won several South Carolina Press Association awards, including the top award in General Excellence for a third consecutive year; and

 

Whereas, in print since 1904, The Journal is an award-winning newspaper published by the Edwards Group in Seneca. With five editions a week, Tuesday through Saturday, The Journal is the foremost news source for Oconee and western Pickens Counties; and

 

Whereas, The Journal provides coverage on crime, politics, news, sports, community events, local business, obituaries, and more through print and online e-editions; and

 

Whereas, for the third year in a row, and for the fifth time in recent history, The Journal has earned the prestigious First Place Award for General Excellence; and

 

Whereas, the South Carolina Press Association gives out the General Excellence award each year during the annual news contest to the publication demonstrating excellence in every aspect of journalism, including content, writing, design, editing, headlines, use of photographs, editorial page quality, sports, and lifestyle coverage; and

 

Whereas, in addition to the General Excellence award, The Journal and its editorial staff won eighteen individual awards, including first place in the Beat Reporting category, won by Lauren Pierce; first place for News Feature Writing, won by Andrea Kelley; first place for Lifestyle Feature Writing, won by Lauren Pierce; first place for Profile Feature Writing, won by Andrea Kelley; first place for a Spot Sports Story, won by Eric Sprott; first place for a Sports Feature Photo, won by Sean Smith; among several other impressive awards; and

 

Whereas, the Senate is grateful for The Journal's dedicated service to the people and the State of South Carolina and takes great pleasure in saluting the newspaper for receiving the prestigious South Carolina Press Association General Excellence award.  Now, therefore,

 

Be it resolved by the Senate:

 

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate The Journal for winning several South Carolina Press Association awards, including the top award in General Excellence for a third consecutive year.

 

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Chief Operating Officer of the Edwards Group and owner of The Journal, Hal Welch.
