A senate RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE Our Lady Star of the Sea Ladies guild upon the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary and to commend the Guild for its many years of dedicated service to the people and the State of South Carolina.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to recognize Our Lady Star of the Sea Ladies Guild at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in North Myrtle Beach as it celebrates this important milestone; and

Whereas, Our Lady Star of the Sea Ladies Guild is a valued member of the North Myrtle Beach community that does a great deal of good throughout the region; and

Whereas, through the fundraising efforts of the Our Lady Star of the Sea Ladies Guild, yearly support is provided to over twenty-five charities. The guild focuses donations on support for unborn children through Grand Strand Citizens for Life; rape victims through the Rape Crisis Center; sufferers of domestic abuse through the Family Justice Center; single, widowed, or divorced men through A Father's Place; and foster children through Julie's Kids; and

Whereas, for approximately forty years, seven days a week, volunteers from the Ladies Guild have operated a religious shop and book center in the church to foster spiritual growth in parishioners, visitors, and those of other faiths; and

Whereas, the Ladies Guild Prayer Shawl Ministry has provided thousands of handmade hats, scarves, and blankets to men, women, and children in need, as well as lap blankets for nursing homes and the sick, including those suffering from Alzheimer's disease; and

Whereas, since 2006, the guild has maintained relationships with local nursing homes. Through visits that include craft activities, dance parties, and ongoing correspondence with individual residents, guild members foster friendships with elder community members who have sometimes been forgotten; and

Whereas, the Ladies Guild also supports and honors American military veterans through the Quilts of Valor program, the Veterans Welcome Home program, and by providing handmade comforters for forty tiny homes for veterans in Myrtle Beach; and

Whereas, for the past twenty years, the guild has provided three to six one-thousand-dollar scholarships yearly to children in their parish who need financial assistance. These acts of charity are but a sampling of the devoted service that members of the guild offer to their community; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate greatly appreciate the dedication and commitment of Our Lady Star of the Sea Ladies Guild to serving the people and the State of South Carolina.  Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate Our Lady Star of the Sea Ladies Guild upon the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary and commend the guild for its many years of dedicated service to the people and the State of South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the members of the Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church Ladies Guild and the pastor of the church, Reverend John M. Zimmerman.
