A senate RESOLUTION
TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR Mt. Nebo African Methodist Episcopal church upon the occasion of the church's one hundred forty-first anniversary.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to recognize Mt. Nebo African Methodist Episcopal Church in Awendaw upon the occasion of the church's one hundred forty-first anniversary; and
Whereas, Mt. Nebo AME Church was established around the year 1885. The property was donated by the late Brother John Drayton Sr., and many people have been instrumental in establishing the church and fostering its growth over the years; and
Whereas, many members of the church community have provided their dedicated care and service to the church, including the Brown family, Dent family, Deberry family, Drayton family, Cobb family, Carroll family, Edward family, Washington family, Stewart family, Seaward family, Grampus family, Pinckney family, William family, Hamilton family, Truesdale family, Butler family, Anderson family, Johnson family, Wiggins family, Youngblood family, Gardner family, Malloy family, Singleton family, Sami family, Gabe family, Smalls family, Murray family, Smith family, Butler family, Taylor family, Campbell family, Simmons family, Mitchell family, Holmes family, Grant family, Gibbs family, Nesbitt family, Nelson family, Braxton family, and many more; and
Whereas, the Mt. Nebo AME Church family is pleased to have had three of its members become ministers. Of the three, two were ordained in South Carolina conferences and served as itinerant elders. The late Reverend J. O. Johnson was sent out with a charge to pastor several churches, while Reverend Chester Middleton and Reverend W. Bennett serve at their home church; and
Whereas, under the leadership of the Reverend Isaac Johnson, the church purchased and installed their beautiful stained-glass windows. In November 2020, Reverend James Peterson Jr. became a member of the Mt. Nebo AME Church family and worked side by side with the trustee board, steward board, and members to perform major renovations to the church; and
Whereas, from 1944, the ministers that have served at Mt. Nebo include Reverend Johnny L. James, Reverend J. Nero, Reverend Glover, Reverend T. Nelson, Reverend J. A. Jenkins, Reverend Stevenson, Reverend McDonald, Reverend Walter Jones, Reverend John Randolph, Reverend Clarence Rivers, Reverend Christopher Smith Jr., Reverend J. P. Harrison, Reverend John Alston Jr., Reverend Henry Cohen, Reverend Peter H. Pinckney, Reverend Melvin Williams, Reverend Harold Jefferson, Reverend Curtis Fludd, Reverend Raymond Middleton, Reverend Serena Freeman, Reverend Isaac Johnson, Reverend Lubert R. Pressley, Reverend Darryl Lee, Reverend James Peterson Jr., and supply pastor, Reverend Cora Singleton; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate greatly appreciate the dedication and commitment that Mt. Nebo African Methodist Episcopal Church has shown in serving the people and the State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize and honor Mt. Nebo African Methodist Episcopal Church upon the occasion of the church's one hundred forty-first anniversary.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the leadership of Mt. Nebo African Methodist Episcopal Church.
