A concurrent RESOLUTION
TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME the portion of Cates Bay HIGHWAY from its intersection with Highway 134 to its intersection with Highway 804 IN horry COUNTY "Bobby Long Martin Highway" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS AT THIS LOCATION CONTAINING THE DESIGNATION.
Whereas, Bobby Long Martin was a farmer, as well as the owner and operator of the Sea Horn Motel in Surfside. He also built, owned, and operated the Quick Shop at the corner of Cates Bay Highway and Highway 134 until his death in 1991; and
Whereas, Mr. Martin served as a Seargeant with the South Carolina National Guard until 1953 in the 263rd Tank Battalion, C Company; and
Whereas, a civic leader, Mr. Martin helped establish the first fire station on Cates Bay that is still operational today, and he lobbied with the late Senator James Stevens to have Highway 804 paved for travel and school buses; and
Whereas, in 1988, Mr. Martin sold over an acre of land to Horry Electric Cooperative to establish a power substation to enable growth to the community in the area, and he sold two acres in 1989 to Horry County Solid Waste Authority to establish the first and only trash dump on Cates Bay Highway; and
Whereas, Mr. Martin served with a number of boards, including serving as commissioner for the South Carolina Soil and Water Conservation, as well as a member of the board of directors for the Farm Bureau, the Horry Georgetown Homebuilders Association, and the Southeast Lumber Manufacturer Association; and
Whereas, Mr. Martin leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Dianne Martin; and
Whereas, it would be only fitting and proper to pay tribute to this son of South Carolina by naming a portion of road in the State in his honor. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, request that the Department of Transportation name the portion of Cates Bay Highway from its intersection with Highway 134 to its intersection with Highway 804 in Horry County "Bobby Long Martin Highway" and erect appropriate markers or signs at this location containing the designation.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation and presented to the family of Bobby Long Martin.
