A concurrent RESOLUTION
TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME The French Quarter Creek Bridge on Cainhoy Road IN Huger In Berkeley COUNTY "William Ellington Sr. Bridge" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS AT THIS LOCATION CONTAINING THE DESIGNATION.
Whereas, William Ellington Sr. was born on February 17, 1923, in Huger. He was a student of Cainhoy Public Schools and a graduate of Berkley Training Night School, where he studied carpentry; and
Whereas, a veteran of the United States Army, Mr. Ellington enlisted in 1943 and faithfully served his country during World War II; and
Whereas, upon returning from his military service, Mr. Ellington utilized his carpentry degree and was employed by the Naval Supply Center Transportation Department where he later retired; and
Whereas, a devout Christian, Mr. Ellington was a member of Zion United Methodist Church, where he served as president of the Usher Board, Class Leader, president of the Trustee Board, member of the Pastor's Parish Relations Committee, member of the United Methodist Men, and Honorary Usher Emeritus. He also supervised and maintained the church's properties, making repairs when needed; and
Whereas, a civic leader, Mr. Ellington was a well-respected volunteer and mentor in the Huger community. In addition to being an active member of East Cooper Lodge #7 and the NAACP, he was known to transport community members to church, the grocery store, doctor's appointments, and voting precincts. Mr. Ellington was also a strong mentor, stressing the importance of education and empowering the youth of his community despite only having received an eighth-grade education; and
Whereas, although Mr. Ellington passed on January 7th, 1998, his impact and legacy of servant leadership is still felt by local leaders, his many family members and friends, and the Huger community; and
Whereas, it would be only fitting and proper to pay tribute to this son of South Carolina by naming a portion of road in the State in his honor. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, request that the Department of Transportation name the French Quarter Creek Bridge on Cainhoy Road in Huger in Berkeley County "William Ellington Sr. Bridge" and erect appropriate markers or signs at this location containing the designation.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation and presented to the family of William Ellington Sr.
