A senate RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE GREENWOOD CHRISTIAN SCHOOL BOYS SOCCER TEAM, COACHES, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS FOR AN OUTSTANDING SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR WINNING THE 2026 SOUTH CAROLINA INDEPENDENT SCHOOL ASSOCIATION CLASS 1/2A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.

Whereas, the Greenwood Christian School boys soccer team won the state championship held at Edens Stadium in Columbia on Saturday, May 9, 2026. In an "exciting, heart-attack soccer" game, the Greenwood Hawks defeated Christian Academy 3-1 and finished the season with a 16-1 record; and

Whereas, Greenwood's goalie Isaiah Scott-Palacios bolstered his teammates with brilliant saves, but  Christian Academy scored at the end of the first half. After seventy-five minutes of play, the Hawks had not scored until Eli Seigler shot the team's first goal to tie the game at 1. Sophomore Noah Vahjen placed a corner go-ahead kick, and Sawyer Bagwell shot a perfectly placed assist from forward Tyler Lippens. Greenwood placed 3 goals in six minutes of play to win the team's second state trophy; and

Whereas, in a sport that requires speed and stamina, Head Coach Brian Vahjen and his dedicated coaching staff maximized their own athletic ability and training to forge a championship-caliber team and teach these athletes life principles that will endure beyond the pitch. The Greenwood soccer team has brought a great deal of pride and recognition to the school and the community, and the team can expect many more wins in the days ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Greenwood Christian School boys soccer team, coaches, and school officials for an outstanding season and congratulate them for winning the 2026 South Carolina Independent School Association Class 1/2A State Championship title.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Chris Johns, Head of School, and to Coach Brian Vahjen.
