A senate RESOLUTION

 

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR CHAPLAIN MAJOR GENERAL WILLIAM "BILL" GREEN JR., AND TO COMMEND HIM FOR HIS FAITH, SERVICE, LEADERSHIP, PERSEVERANCE, AND DEDICATION.

 

Whereas, the members of the Senate are pleased to express gratitude to Chaplain Major General William "Bill" Green Jr., a native of Savannah, Georgia. Reared on Hilton Head Island, he graduated from high school in Bluffton and enlisted in the United States Army as a cannon crewman and field radio repairman. Throughout his career, he remained deeply connected to his Lowcountry roots and Gullah Geechee heritage; and

 

Whereas, after answering a call to ministry, he left active duty in 1986 to pursue theological studies and pastoral ministry before returning to military service as an Army chaplain in 1994. He also graduated from Savannah State University in 1989 with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, where he was honored as a distinguished military graduate, earned a Master of Divinity from Candler School of Theology at Emory University in 1992, and was ordained and endorsed by the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc.; and

 

Whereas, he served in the United States Army for more than three decades as a chaplain, leader, mentor, and senior advisor. His service culminated in his appointment as the 26th Chief of Chaplains of the United States Army and promotion to the rank of Major General. In this capacity, he provided strategic leadership for the Army Chaplain Corps and oversaw religious support and spiritual care for soldiers, families, and Army civilians worldwide; and

 

Whereas, Chaplain Major General Green served in leadership positions across the United States and overseas, including combat deployments in support of military operations. His service included deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Joint Forge; and

 

Whereas, prior to becoming Chief of Chaplains of the United States Army, he served as the Deputy Chief of Chaplains; Director of the United States Army Institute for Religious Leadership; Command Chaplain of the United States Army Pacific at Fort Shafter, Hawaii; and Command Chaplain of I Corps at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, among other leadership positions; and

 

Whereas, his distinguished military service has been recognized with such prestigious awards as Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster; Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster; Meritorious Service Medal with Silver and Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters; Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster; Army Achievement Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters; Army Staff Identification Badge; and numerous campaign, service, and unit awards; and

 

Whereas, Chaplain Major General Green has never forgotten his humble Lowcountry roots from his youth in the state's Gullah Geechee community through his remarkable journey to one of the highest ranking chaplains in the United States Army. This journey stands as an inspiration to generations of South Carolinians; and

 

Whereas, because his achievements reflect positively upon the State of South Carolina, Lowcountry community leaders have planned a recognition event for October 2026. His achievements demonstrate the profound impact that faith, education, family, community, and public service can have on an individual's life and legacy; and

 

Whereas, the South Carolina Senate values the tremendous effect that Chaplain Major General Green's life has had on the myriad servicemen and their families, and the members of the Senate wish him continued success and happiness in his community and ministry. Now, therefore,

 

Be it resolved by the Senate:

 

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize and honor Chaplain Major General William "Bill" Green Jr., and commend him for his faith, service, leadership, perseverance, and dedication.

 

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Chaplain William "Bill" Green Jr.,  Major General, United States Army.
