A senate RESOLUTION
TO CELEBRATE THE HISTORIC TWO HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY OF WALNUT GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH, AND TO COMMEND THE CHURCH FOR TWO CENTURIES OF SERVICE TO THE GREENWOOD COUNTY COMMUNITY AND THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.
Whereas, the South Carolina Senate is pleased to learn that Walnut Grove Baptist Church, of Greenwood County, will celebrate its bicentennial anniversary on September 27, 2026; and
Whereas, the church was constituted on June 26, 1826, in what was then the Abbeville District, under the ministry of the Reverend Arthur Williams, Chesley Davis, and the Reverend Moses Holland. The eighteen original charter members were drawn from the first pioneer families, whose names are still written across the land and the churchyard today. Through two centuries of war, hardship, and change, the congregation has never ceased to gather; and
Whereas, the congregation first met in a simple brush arbor along Mulberry Creek, with the current sanctuary being built in the 1950s on Morgan Road. Today, Walnut Grove continues the old and reverent forms of worship, singing from traditional hymnals that carried the faith of its forebears; and
Whereas, for two hundred years, Walnut Grove Baptist Church has remained a faithful and active fellowship, standing as a house of worship and a pillar of the Greenwood community. They are devoted to preaching the Word of God and serving the community. As the church enters its third century, they are looking forward with the same conviction that gathered its first members: to carry the Gospel of Faith, Hope, and Love into the twenty-first century and beyond. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, celebrate the historic two hundredth anniversary of Walnut Grove Baptist Church, and commend the church for two centuries of service to the Greenwood County community and the State of South Carolina.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Walnut Grove Baptist Church.
