A house RESOLUTION

 

TO CONGRATULATE ELLEN CLOTELLA DAVIS SIMMONS ON THE OCCASION OF HER ONE HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY AND TO WISH HER A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND CONTINUED HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.

 

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are delighted to learn that Ellen Clotella Davis Simmons will celebrate her one hundredth birthday on January 18, 2026; and

 

Whereas, born on January 18, 1926, in Marion, South Carolina, she has witnessed many remarkable social changes, technological advancements, and international developments that have spanned the globe over the course of her life so far; and

 

Whereas, Mrs. Simmons, as a woman of faith, is a lifetime member of St. John AME Church in Marion, where she served as choir director for more than forty years; and

 

Whereas, she received her bachelor of science degree from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, North Carolina, and her master of arts degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan; and

 

Whereas, Mrs. Simmons worked in the South Carolina public school system for over forty-four years, including thirty-four years at the historic Dillon County Training School/Latimer School; and

 

Whereas, as an educator in the public school system, she worked in the areas of elementary education, general science, home economics, compensatory reading, and learning disabilities. During her tenure at Latimer, she sponsored many extracurricular activities, including the Choralettes Glee Club, the Dance Group, the Cheerleading Group, and the NHA Club, and she served as assistant principal at Latimer Middle School; and

 

Whereas, to honor her at this very special time in her life, family, friends, former students, and the town of Latta, in Dillon County, will join with Mrs. Simmons to celebrate her centennial birthday on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at Latimer School; and

 

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to honor this daughter of South Carolina at the celebration of her one hundredth birthday and join in with her family and friends in congratulating her on reaching this extraordinary milestone. Now, therefore,

 

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

 

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Ellen Clotella Davis Simmons on the occasion of her one hundredth birthday and wish her a joyous birthday celebration and continued health and happiness.

 

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Ellen Clotella Davis Simmons.
