A house RESOLUTION
TO EXPRESS the PROFOUND SORROW of the members of the south carolina house of representatives UPON THE PASSING OF Dr. Myra Jewel George AND TO EXTEND their DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER LARGE AND LOVING FAMILY AND HER MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members South Carolina House of Representatives were saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Myra Jewel George at the age of sixty-two on December 8, 2024; and
Whereas, born in Bishopville on October 17, 1962, she was a daughter of the late Mattie Copeland George and James Edward George, and she was reared in a loving home with four siblings: Lelia George Green, James Edward George Jr., the late Mae Joyce George Hamilton, and the late Cynthia George Wilson; and
Whereas, a dedicated scholar, Dr. George graduated as valedictorian from Bishopville High School at the age of seventeen. She earned a bachelor's degree in English from Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina; a master's degree in English from The Ohio State University in Columbus; and a doctorate in education from Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan; and
Whereas, together with Greg, her beloved husband of more than forty years, she reared two fine children, Dr. Mackenzie Jessica George Alston and Jeremy Charles Morgan Alston, in whom she instilled a commitment to excellence and from whom she was blessed to witness their success in their chosen careers; and
Whereas, dedicated to her community, she served as an officer in Big Brothers & Big Sisters and as the secretary of the Ozaukee County Chapter of the NAACP, and she supported and encouraged many other organizations; and
Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is grateful for the life and legacy of Myra George and for the example of excellence and passion she set for all who knew her. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Dr. Myra Jewel George and extend their deepest sympathy to her large and loving family and her many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dr. Myra Jewel George.
