A concurrent RESOLUTION

 

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPON THE PASSING OF LIEUTENANT LANSING P. "PETE" LOGAN OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA LAW ENFORCEMENT DIVISION, TO CELEBRATE HIS LIFE, AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

 

Whereas, the South Carolina General Assembly was deeply saddened by the passing of Lieutenant Lansing P. "Pete" Logan of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division on December 17, 2025, at the age of ninety. Truly, the great State of South Carolina has lost a legend in this man who completed his career with more than sixty years of distinguished public service in law enforcement; and

 

Whereas, in 1989, having already concluded a highly esteemed career of public service with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Lieutenant Logan took up his duties with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and faithfully served the agency until his retirement in 2022; and

 

Whereas, Pete Logan began his life's work by serving all of us in the United States Army. While with the FBI, he worked the Selma bombings and the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. While serving with SLED in South Carolina, he was the one who persuaded Susan Smith to confess to drowning her two sons. He also was known for his mentorship of innumerable law enforcement agents and prosecutors, both personally and in the handling of complex criminal investigations and prosecutions; and

 

Whereas, further, he was instrumental in the development of the South Carolina State Grand Jury (SGJ) from its inception in 1989, and, as one of its founding fathers, he was recognized by the naming of the SGJ Conference Room in his honor in 2021. He also provided exceptional service to the SGJ and the South Carolina Attorney General's Office for more than three decades; and

 

Whereas, considered the gold standard in law enforcement, Lieutenant Logan received numerous honors over the course of his career, including the Strom Thurmond Award for Excellence in Law Enforcement for outstanding federal service to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (1987); the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina's highest civilian honor, presented by Governor Henry McMaster (2018); and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division Chief's Award (2021); and

 

Whereas, Lieutenant Logan rendered a lifetime of dedicated service and achievement to South Carolina and to the United States of America, and, in so doing, earned the supreme trust, confidence, and respect of his peers and the public. He leaves to cherish his memory his dear wife of more than fifty years, Fairey Belle Logan, a host of loving family and friends, and other admirers; and

 

Whereas, the South Carolina General Assembly is eternally grateful for Pete Logan's firm commitment to the pursuit of justice in the Palmetto State. The people of South Carolina were made better by his influence and will greatly miss his impactful presence. Now, therefore,

 

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

 

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Lieutenant Lansing P. "Pete" Logan of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, celebrate his life, and extend the deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

 

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family.
