A house RESOLUTION

to express the profound sorrow of the members of the South Carolina house of representatives upon the passing of Martin Alphin of Richland county and to extend their deepest sympathy to his loving family and many friends.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Martin Alphin at the age of seventy-four on Monday, January 26, 2026; and

Whereas, born on November 1, 1951, in Kinston, North Carolina, Martin was a graduate of the University of Alabama and a man of faith, integrity, and unwavering commitment; and

Whereas, as a devoted father, he sacrificed tirelessly to ensure his sons had every opportunity to succeed.  He often began his workday before sunrise and returned home in time for family dinner, and he rarely missed his sons' sporting events.  Whether attending a swim meet, soccer match, baseball game, or golf tournament, he was always present, offering steadfast love and support; and

Whereas, at the age of nineteen, Martin was critically injured in a motorcycle accident that nearly claimed his life.  Despite life-altering injuries, the accident never defined him.  He went on to work in commercial construction project management for more than forty years, contributing to projects ranging from major urban office buildings to fine dining establishments across the Southeast.  His work left a lasting imprint on downtown landscapes in cities, including Charlotte, Raleigh, Richmond, and Clarksville, Tennessee, the birthplace of his sons.  Known for his meticulous attention to detail, he was widely respected and sought after for his expertise in cost estimation on large-scale projects; and

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is grateful for the life, legacy, and example of   Martin Alphin, a man of sharp intellect, quick wit, and understated humor, whose character and dedication enriched the lives of all who were privileged to know him.  Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Martin Alphin of Richland County and extend their deepest sympathy to his loving family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Martin Alphin.
