A house RESOLUTION

 

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE PASSING OF TAMMY J. MCCOTTRY, TO CELEBRATE HER LIFE AND HER REMARKABLE COMMITMENT TO HER COMMUNITY, AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

 

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were greatly saddened to learn of the passing of Tammy J. McCottry at the age of 65 on Tuesday, February 3, 2026; and

 

Whereas, born on April 23, 1960, in Charleston, Tammy McCottry, a graduate of Howard University, was a media personality and community advocate known as "The Media Mogul" who was highly celebrated for her inspiring civic and nonprofit work, while also advocating for and highlighting the stories of women, families, and underserved groups; and

 

Whereas, she founded her first production company, McCottry Productions Inc. in 1998 and produced various acclaimed programs, including "The Single Parent Corner," a program that she hosted for four years and that aired on UPN and NBC for five years. She also founded and served as CEO of Tammy Media Group, a media and event management, production, public relations, and consulting company, where she served as host and executive producer of award winning shows like, "Tammy," which was praised for its in-depth interviews with community leaders and celebrities, and  "Tammy: Your Story, Your Community," where she embraced the mission of inspiring people, having meaningful conversations, and highlighting stories that shaped communities in the Lowcountry; and

 

Whereas, Tammy McCottry was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., the Order of the Eastern Star, Unity Chapter 370, and was also a member of the National Association of Television Producers and Executives. She served on the board of numerous organizations in the community, as well as founding and organizing The Parents Corner USA, a nonprofit organization targeted to economically disadvantaged parents and at-risk youth, dedicated to helping parents and their children restructure the family unit by giving them the tools needed to encourage the development of moral fiber, character, and family values, as well as establishing the National Women and Girls Summit, which focuses on teaching healthy, happy lifestyles to young girls; and

 

Whereas, she was honored over her lifetime with numerous awards for her exceptional contributions to the community, including receiving the Dr. Martain Luther King Jr. Picture Award, being named one of LinkedIn's 2020 Influential African American Women, and serving as the 2020 ambassador of the N.E.N.O. Summits for the Southeastern Chamber of Commerce. She was also honored by the former Mayor of Charleston, Joseph P. Riley Jr., who declared November 19 as "Tammy McCottry Day" in 2022 and was recognized for her selfless work by the South Carolina Senate; and

 

Whereas, Tammy McCottry is the author of the book, Love for Our Daughters: From a Mother's Heart, a collection of letters from a mother to her teenage daughter, giving warm and engaging advice to young women. As a motivational speaker, Tammy gave countless speeches at churches, colleges, nonprofit organizations, and corporations, sharing her faith, philosophy, and inspirational advice; and

 

Whereas, her legacy will live on in her daughter, Catherine, and all who knew and loved her, as they continue to share her motivating story and mission of supporting her community; and

 

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the life and legacy of Tammy McCottry and for the inspiring example of sacrifice, service, strong faith, and kindness she set for all who knew her. Now, therefore,

 

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

 

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Tammy J. McCottry, celebrate her life and her remarkable commitment to her community, and extend their deepest sympathy to her family and friends.

 

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Tammy J. McCottry.
