A house RESOLUTION

TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE THE CHRIST OUR KING-STELLA MARIS SCHOOL EIGHTH-GRADE BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM, COACHES, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS ON A REMARKABLE SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM ON WINNING THE DIOCESE OF CHARLESTON CATHOLIC MIDDLE SCHOOL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were pleased to hear that the Christ Our King-Stella Maris School eighth-grade basketball team, of Mount Pleasant, captured the Diocese of Charleston Catholic Middle School State Championship on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at Bishop England High School; and

Whereas, the Diocesan statewide tournament features Catholic middle schools from around the State. This tournament, held in Charleston this year, rotates annually between Charleston, Greenville, Aiken, and Myrtle Beach; and

Whereas, the Christ Our King-Stella Maris Crusaders prevailed with a 34-27 win over the Our Lady of The Rosary Lions from Greenville. The Crusaders built an early lead using great team play and a tenacious defense that lasted throughout the game. The Crusaders won five straight tournament games to get to the championship, finishing the season at 14-5; and

Whereas, the championship win was a result of a fierce team effort by every young athlete on the court. Patrick Shores led the team in scoring, with Jacob Gallo and Kellan Frisch as defensive stoppers and Carson Schleier running the offense; and

Whereas, the mission of Christ Our King-Stella Maris School is to serve the East Cooper Catholic Community by providing an outstanding Catholic education for students in prekindergarten through grade eight in the parishes of Christ Our King, Stella Maris, St. Benedict's, and Saint Clare of Assisi. Their vision is to provide an outstanding 21st-century Catholic education and to inspire the whole child by promoting an educational philosophy characterized by charity, respect, and outreach to all people on this earth. The school's core values are faith in their children, hope for their future, and love for one another. They teach their students to know that they must appreciate and use the gifts that they have been given for the good of all and for the glory of God. They strive always to become academically excellent, to foster their spiritual, physical, and emotional growth, and most of all to love one another; and

Whereas, in a sport that requires strength and agility, Head Coach Matt Wain and his assistant coach, Andrew Gormley, utilized their own experience and passion for the sport to inspire and shape these young athletes into a championship-caliber team. The lessons that these coaches have taught their team will continue to shape them on and off the court; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives value the pride and recognition that the Christ Our King-Stella Maris School eighth-grade boys basketball team have brought to their school and community. The members look forward to following their continued achievements in the days to come.  Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, honor and recognize the Christ Our King-Stella Maris School eighth-grade boys basketball team, coaches, and school officials on a remarkable season and congratulate them on winning the Diocese of Charleston Catholic Middle School State Championship.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Christ Our King-Stella Maris School President John Byrnes, Principal Charlotte Funston, and Head Coach Matt Wain.
