A house RESOLUTION

 

to recognize and honor Jordan Funeral Home for the long-standing and sympathetic service offered to families in Darlington and the surrounding areas and wish it continued success in its eightieth year.

 

Whereas, Jordan Funeral Home has been a mainstay in Darlington County since before the middle of the 20th century. The original structure on the corner of Lee and South Main Street in Darlington was destroyed by fire. In 1942, Mr. Washington Jordan built a new facility at its present location on Lee Street, with a preparation area, showroom, chapel, and a viewing area; and

 

Whereas, the first funeral coach, purchased from Kistler Funeral Home in Darlington, often was used to transport people to the doctor, for ambulance service to hospitals, removal of remains, and funerals. His coverage area included Darlington, Timmonsville, Lamar, Dovesville, Society Hill, and the connecting communities. His first funeral service was in September 1942 for Mr. Mauruel Carroway; and

 

Whereas, working alongside Mr. Jordan was his beloved wife, Mrs. Charlotte Casley Jordan, a graduate of Renouard Training School for Embalmers in New York City. They faithfully continued the business with a staff that included Mr. Callis Mitchell, embalmer, Mr. Willie Bristow, attendant, and Mr. Sherman L. Barno Sr., who joined them in 1969 upon graduation from the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science; and

 

Whereas, following the death of Mr. Jordan on December 12, 1975, Mrs. Jordan continued to operate the business until declining health from a 1977 automobile accident reduced her role and the torch was passed to her son, Raymond Jordan. A teacher in the Florence District School System, Raymond resigned his teaching position to carry on the business under the supervision of his mother. Upon her death on September 29, 1982, Raymond Jordan assumed ownership and continued the legacy begun by his parents. The Reverend E. B. Burroughs joined the staff to assist while Raymond obtained his required funeral director license credentials; and

 

Whereas, during his tenure, Raymond Jordan made additional improvements to the Lee Street establishment that included a large chapel with viewing area, organ, piano, and sound system, a fourteen-unit coffin display room, a large room for body preparation and dressing, family sitting rooms, an employee lounge, restrooms, and a seven-space garage. An enlarged staff of eight included a licensed director and embalmer, a lady attendant, grave personnel, notaries, and a certified nursing attendant; and

 

Whereas, after four decades of service to the extended Darlington community, Mr. Raymond Jordan passed away on July 23, 2022. Jordan Funeral Home now is in the capable hands of Elder Sedale J. Green who serves as manager, funeral director, and embalmer. The Darlington County native earned a bachelor's degree from Coker College, an associate's degree from Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service, and a Master of Divinity from Howard University. He is licensed as a funeral director and embalmer in South Carolina, Georgia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. He is a member of the National Funeral Directors Association, the South Carolina Funeral Directors Association, the South Carolina Morticians Association, and the Sixth District Morticians Association; and

 

Whereas, now in its eightieth year, Jordan Funeral Home continues its tradition upholding values of respect, service, integrity, and care. Their professionalism and transparency have earned them a reputation as a place where families feel well cared for when gathering to celebrate life and find comfort in difficult times. Jordan Funeral Home's involvement in the community extends beyond its mortuary services with a long history of financially supporting church and public functions. Now, therefore,

 

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

 

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Jordan Funeral Home for the long-standing and sympathetic service offered to families in Darlington and the surrounding areas and wish it continued success in its eightieth year.
