A concurrent RESOLUTION

 

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR STELLA GRACE BURROUGHS, A STUDENT AT THE FAIRFIELD MAGNET SCHOOL FOR MATH AND SCIENCE, AND TO CONGRATULATE HER FOR BEING THE STATE WINNER OF THE 2026 SOUTH CAROLINA CHILDREN'S BOOK CHALLENGE.

 

Whereas, Stella Grace Burroughs won the grand prize in the 2026 South Carolina Children's Book Challenge for her book, The Day That Power Took a Vacation; and

 

Whereas, the Children's Book Challenge, sponsored by Fairfield Electric Cooperative and the Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina, invited participating students from across the State to write and illustrate a children's book that focused on a day in the life of a line worker; and

 

Whereas, Miss Burroughs' entry, The Day That Power Took a Vacation, competed against books from across South Carolina after being selected by Fairfield Electric as the local finalist; and

 

Whereas, Miss Burroughs received a prize of five hundred dollars, and her book will be printed and mailed to elementary schools throughout South Carolina. Fairfield Electric also awarded her a prize of one hundred dollars for winning the local challenge; and

 

Whereas, Ms. Kimberly Daly, the visual arts teacher at the Fairfield Magnet School for Math and Science, guided Stella Grace through the book challenge process, and Ms. Daly received a two-hundred-fifty-dollar prize; and

 

Whereas, The Day That Power Took a Vacation tells the story of what happened when the power went out after Hurricane Helene and how the line workers who restored that power were like superheroes; and

 

Whereas, South Carolina's electric cooperatives have been committed to providing electric power to rural communities since 1938. This concern for communities and for the future of youth across South Carolina has been carried forward to this day; and

 

Whereas, by inspiring students to learn more about energy in the Palmetto State, South Carolina's electric cooperatives hope to spark a passion for critical thinking in the minds of tomorrow's leaders; and

 

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly value Stella Grace Burroughs's dedication, creativity, and significant contribution to the State of South Carolina, and the members extend best wishes to her for continued success in all of her future endeavors. Now, therefore,

 

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

 

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor Stella Grace Burroughs, a student at the Fairfield Magnet School for Math and Science, and congratulate her for being the state winner of the 2026 South Carolina Children's Book Challenge.

 

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Stella Grace Burroughs.
