A house RESOLUTION
TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE MEMBERS OF THE GREENVILLE GIRL FRIENDS AT THE CELEBRATION OF THEIR TWENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES FOR MANY MORE YEARS OF FRIENDSHIP, SERVICE, AND CONVIVIALITY.
Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that the members of the Greenville Girl Friends will celebrate their silver jubilee on September 12, 2026; and
Whereas, the Greenville Chapter of The Girl Friends® Inc. is part of one of the oldest and most highly respected social organizations of African American women in the United States. Founded in 1927 in New York City during the Harlem Renaissance, The Girl Friends® now includes forty-nine chapters nationwide, of which the Greenville Chapter is the forty-third. Members serve their communities in countless capacities, as authors, professors, doctors, lawyers, business owners, members of the U.S. Congress, wives, and mothers; and
Whereas, the organization's purpose is upheld by four pillars: the promotion of friendship; the provision of social activities; the performance of civic services in local communities through organizations like Meals on Wheels, United Way, and Eleos Ministry; and the support of national projects; and
Whereas, community service efforts span charitable and cultural initiatives. Nationally, the group has supported organizations such as the NAACP, United Negro College Fund, Children's Defense Fund, Martin Luther King Memorial Foundation, and Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, as well as relief efforts for the Flint water crisis. In 1989, The Girl Friends® established The Girl Friends Fund, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to providing financial assistance to students across the country; and
Whereas, the House takes great pride and pleasure in saluting the members of the Greenville Girl Friends as they commemorate a quarter century of praiseworthy accomplishments. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the members of the Greenville Girl Friends at the celebration of their twenty-fifth anniversary and extend best wishes for many more years of friendship, service, and conviviality.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Greenville Girl Friends.
