A senate RESOLUTION

 

TO CONGRATULATE seneca presbyterian church UPON THE OCCASION OF ITS one hundred fiftieth ANNIVERSARY AND TO COMMEND the church FOR ITS MANY YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE seneca COMMUNITY AND THE PEOPLE AND THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

 

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to recognize Seneca Presbyterian Church as it celebrates this important milestone; and

 

Whereas, Seneca Presbyterian Church was officially organized on October 30, 1875, by a commission of the South Carolina Presbytery that included the Reverend E. F. Hyde and the Reverend John G. Law. There were twelve charter members of the church, including J. W. Livingston and W. B. Hills, the first elders of the church, and T. A. McElroy, the first deacon of the church; and

 

Whereas, Seneca Presbyterian Church joined with Methodists, Baptists, and Episcopalians in building what was then known as the "Union Church" to be used by all four denominations as a house of worship. In 1882, the Presbyterians sold their interest in the building to the Baptists and began building their own first church building, which they completed in June 1883; and

 

Whereas, Seneca Presbyterian Church's first reverend was Reverend Josiah McLeod Seabrook, who served from 1884 until 1888. In 1884, the church body consisted of thirty-seven members, which included three elders and three deacons; and

 

Whereas, in the early 1900s, the church was growing enough to warrant a new church building. The work on the new sanctuary began in June 1916 and was completed in time for the first service on June 24, 1917; and

 

Whereas, an additional church building known as the "chapter house" was built in 1924. It served as both a meeting house and educational space. The church bought neighboring property in 1956 and built an education building in 1962; and

 

Whereas, Presbyterians practice a thoughtful faith that engages the mind and the heart; and

 

Whereas, on October 26, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., Seneca Presbyterian Church will celebrate its anniversary with a Kirking of the Tartans Anniversary Worship Service, at which time they will rejoice over and honor God's work and ministry through the church for its one hundred fifty years; and

 

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Seneca greatly appreciate the dedication and commitment of Seneca Presbyterian Church to serving the people and the State of South Carolina.  Now, therefore,

 

Be it resolved by the Senate:

 

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate Seneca Presbyterian Church upon the occasion of its one hundred fiftieth anniversary and commend the church for its many years of dedicated service to the Seneca community and the people and the State of South Carolina.
