A senate RESOLUTION
TO EXPRESS PROFOUND SORROW UPON THE PASSING OF Lawson George AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Lawson George on January 30, 2026; and
Whereas, a native of Walterboro, Mr. George was born on February 19, 1944 to the late Holland Lawson George Sr. and the late Marie Razor George. He graduated from Colleton County High School in 1962, and he graduated from the barbering program at Denmark Technical College in Denmark in 1964; and
Whereas, Mr. George began his career as a barber in Kingstree, where he built a respected barbering career that spanned over sixty years. Throughout those years he became a mentor, friend, and trusted listener to generations of clients; and
Whereas, a civic leader, Mr. George served with many community organizations, including as a member of the Palmetto Barber's Association for more than thirty years and as a member of Sunlight Lodge #221 in Walterboro. He was previously employed with Redmond Richardson Funeral Home, and he also served many years on the Williamsburg County Board of Alcohol and Drug Abuse; and
Whereas, a devout Christian, he was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend W. E. Chaney. Later, he transferred his membership to Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church, where he remained a dedicated and faithful member. He served on the Trustee Board, Steward Board, Finance Committee, Usher Board, Male Choir, and as president of the Men's Club; and
Whereas, Mr. George was preceded in death by his parents; his two sisters, Gertie Ann Williams and Etta Mae Sumter; and his two brothers, Ernest George and Daniel George; and
Whereas, Mr. George leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Ruth George; his three loving children, Sheila George, Marcus (Cheryl) George, and Lateefa (Carl) Sinkler; six grandchildren, Ja'Wonn, Ka'Wonn, Shaylah, Tatiana, Jaylon, and Travis (TJ); four great-grandchildren, Ava, Jrayven, Ja'Kobie, and Tierney; three brothers, Thomas George, Willie Ray (Cindy) George, and Eugene Donaldson; three sisters-in-law, Gracie Ellison, Barbara (Molten) Selby, who was raised like a daughter, and Janice George; a special sister-in-law, Gwendolyn George; three devoted friends that he took as sons, Christopher Williams, Henry "Buddah Rat" Nesmith, and Dwayne Fulton, a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives. He will be greatly missed. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, express profound sorrow upon the passing of Lawson George and extend the deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Lawson George.
