A senate RESOLUTION

 

TO EXPRESS PROFOUND SORROW UPON THE PASSING OF Laura Lorine Patterson Huggins AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

 

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Laura Lorine Patterson Huggins on February 16, 2026; and

 

Whereas, a native of Scotia, Mrs. Huggins was born on March 16, 1923, to parents Henry and Emma Patterson. She is a graduate of the Jasper County Public School System in Ridgeland, and she is an alumna of Benedict College in Columbia; and

 

Whereas, a devoted educator, Mrs. Huggins worked for the Hampton County Board in South Carolina and the Jefferson County Board in Georgia for over forty-two years; and

 

Whereas, in her free time, Mrs. Huggins enjoyed canning fruits and vegetables, playing the piano, sewing, reading, and helping others. The town of Estill designated March 8, 2017, as "Laura Lorine Patterson Huggins Day" in her honor; and

 

Whereas, she was baptized as a Jehovah's Witness in the early 1970s and was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Hampton. She developed a deep knowledge along with a great love for both Jehovah and Jesus. Her dedication led her to become a "pioneer minister" in the congregation; and

 

Whereas, Mrs. Huggins preceded in death by her husband, Professor Willie W. Huggins; her parents; son, Dwight A. Huggins Sr.; and siblings, Rosa, Anna, Lillie, and John Henry Patterson; and

 

Whereas, Mrs. Huggins leaves to cherish her memory her son, Everett Huggins; daughter, Lisbeth Huggins; granddaughters, Tameka Huggins, Vida Daniels, Francesca Dixon, Shaneka Johnson, and Shanice Huggins; grandson, Dwight Huggins Jr.; great-granddaughters, Jameira Buggs and Koast Madison; great-grandsons, Nakhori Burns and Sincere Green; devoted niece, Betty Brown; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and Worldwide Fellowship of Kingdom Hall "friends, brothers and sisters." She will be greatly missed.  Now, therefore,

 

Be it resolved by the Senate:

 

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, express profound sorrow upon the passing of Laura Lorine Patterson Huggins and extend the deepest sympathy to her family and many friends.

 

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Laura Lorine Patterson Huggins.
