the family and many friends of the late William Gladden Huntt Smoke, Sr., of
St. Matthews in Calhoun County.

A SENATE RESOLUTION
EXPRESSING THE SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE
SENATE TO THE FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS OF THE LATE
WILLIAM GLADDEN HUNTT SMOKE, SR., OF ST. MATTHEWS
IN CALHOUN COUNTY.
Whereas, the members of the Senate were saddened to note the death
on January 22, 1994, of Mr. William Gladden Smoke, Sr., of St.
Matthews in Calhoun County; and
Whereas, Mr. Smoke, a graduate of Clemson University and an Army
veteran of World War II, was the founder of W. Gladden Smoke Oil
Company and W. Gladden Smoke Insurance Agency and was a jobber
for Union 76 Oil Company; and
Whereas, Mr. Smoke served as mayor and a member of the Town
Council of St. Matthews and served on the Lower Savannah Regional
Commission and the Coastal Plains Regional Commission; and
Whereas, among his other activities, Mr. Smoke was a member of the
South Carolina Republican Party, the Palmetto Club, and St. Paul
United Methodist Church, where he was chairman of the board of
trustees, the board of stewards, and the finance committee; and
Whereas, it is appropriate for the members of the Senate to pause in
their deliberations so that they might note the passing of so
distinguished a son of South Carolina. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate extend sympathy to the family and
many friends of the late William Gladden Huntt Smoke, Sr., of St.
Matthews in Calhoun County.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his
wife, Mrs. Aurelia Antley Smoke of 703 East Bridge Street, St.
Matthews, South Carolina.
